Hi
I'm a 25 year old woman with alopecia universalis. My hair loss started three years ago with just one small patch. Only recently I have lost all my body hair. Last year I got engaged and would love to start planning for a family after we get married (also dreading the thoughts of having to wear a wig on our big day :-( . Anyways I am worried that my kids may have/get alopecia.
Is there anyone with alopecia who has had children that could give me some advice.
Thank you

Hi

My daughter has alopecia, my son, my husband and I do not.  Nobody can tell if you will have a child with alopecia....life isn't controllable in that way.  What I would say to you though is...you have alopecia and you will be an incredible resource to your child if they have alopecia as well.

Also, I have the fortunate circumstance to be in contact with many people who have alopecia...there are mothers and children that have alopecia but they are few and far between.  So, there is not a high risk from the people I have met.  So, be positive and know that you will love your children and be able to care for them no matter what.

I also noted that you are feeling a little overwhelmed with having to wear a wig on your big day.  Do your best to work through these emotions before that day.  Find alternatives that you feel beautiful and confident in.  If I can help in any way just pop in an message me.

I wish you well for your upcoming wedding and know without a doubt you will look beautiful.

Thank you so much for your reply Rosy.
It's great to get advice from people.
I'm new to this site but I am already loving the positivity that comes with it,
Thanks again xx

Dear Maria....I understand your emotions...I lost all my hair (AU) four months ago. Nobody in my family ever had any type of hair loss ..so I guess you just never know when this will happen. Having a family is the most wonderful thing in the whole world and dont ever hesitate to start a family out of fear of alopecia.   You will be a beautiful bride to your husband no matter what type of hair you have. I always think of others who are struggling with things that are so  much worse and it helps me remember I am blessed. Do I miss my hair...YES...YES  I do..but am I going to let it change or alter my life..NO! I wear a wig when I need to...and dont when I am home with my husband and kids...a cap sometimes. I wish you the very best......hugs to you!!!
