If you hair loss started or was exacerbated from Wen Cleansing conditioner, there is little time left to file a claim. (April 2017. google wen class settlement) They have admitted to tens of thousands of hair loss complaints and that was years ago. It makes you wonder how much the prevalence of alopecia is triggered by environmental triggers such as chemicals in our products that are banned in the EU and Canada.
My daughter's reaction to Wen was instant and clear, and severe but some can use it for months or years and don't make the connection. There is a FB page called Wen hair loss support group.
Here they are talking about Wen in a senate committee hearing. If your senator is on this committee, ask that they make cosmetic safety a priority!

what kind of alopecia?
I tried a hair straightener a few months before I had my first patch!

It was rinsed into her bath water, and she had universalis.  She has patchy regrowth now, about 50-60%. What products did you use?  I hope not that Brazilian Blowout with 8.7-10,4% formaldehyde according to the FDA's warning letter!

holy moly... it was not Brazilian blowout but it was another very strong product with very high formaldehyde. crap... u think that could have been a trigger?

Could be, I don't know, but formaldehyde is bad news! A strong sensitizer and that's only the beginning.  That's what I'm saying though, I wonder if environmental factors could play a bigger role than we know.  If it's the case though, I would expect more cases of alopecia per capita in the US than in Europe. I have not researched this though. (although US products do find their way there too.)

I did some research... the product I tried a few times was strong in ammonia.

Hi, I have a really dumb question, but how would I know if Wen had anything to do with my son's hair condition? I subscribed to Wen for a few years and my son used it on his hair.  Since his hair was longer we never noticed anything wrong until one day a few years back he decided to get a crew cut and it was then that we noticed a huge bald spot on the back of his head.  After time it began to grow, of course when there is no explanation the doctors diagnose it as alopecia.  Since that time he has had needles, acid, topical steroids etc, to no avail.  At times it comes back but then gets worse.  When it does come back it even shows signs of returning in the back where it began in the first place. It seems the follicles are completely destroyed in that area.  How would I know if the Wen was in connection or simply a coincidence?

It's a good question.  My daughter's reaction was instant, so it was obvious, but I know others who used it for months or years before they were either bald, or made the connection.  I'm in a support group on facebook "Wen hair loss support group", you can ask there what they think. Most of the Wen damage I have seen photos of is bald spots, and some also have chronic rashes and scalp infections, it can be diffuse thinning too. Many of the people there have been dealing with it for a year or more.  (2 1/2 years for us. :-()
I don't know how people who discovered it after a while determine it, other than the fact that they used it and there are an underrepresented number of complaints.  Did he have any other symptoms?  My daughter just had a mild rash afterwards. (don't necessarily have to have other symptoms.)   An immunologist did all kinds of tests - auto-antibody, and inflammation markers, vitamin D, and the usual suspects - all normal. I wonder if those tests are frequently off for auto-immune alopecia.
Find the Wen hair loss support group on FB. If you decide to make a claim, time is short!

By the way, did you get a postcard about the settlement?  They claim everyone was supposed to who bought from Wen and some other sources.

I never got any postcard. I did order from the Wen website for years. As a matter of fact, I still have about 7 bottles of shampoo unopened that I refuse to throw away as proof that I purchased it from them.  I feel terrible and have such a sense of guilt for all of this.

I did take my son for tests which all came back normal so the response that we received from all the specialists was simply "well we still do not know what causes alopecia".  He still has the original bald spot which is huge and never got one hair back, plus an increase in hair loss.  I will check out the facebook page thank you so much for the information.

If you want to claim, you need to gather proof of medical visits, witness statements, and before and after photos, and out of pocket expenses (starting with all that garbage product you can't use!)

Thank you so much for all of your help!

by the way, which variety did he use?  The FDA named the ones with the most complaints. Sweet toxic Almond Mint topped the list, I think Lavender was second.
