Hello everyone.

I was recently (about a year ago) was diagnosed with alopecia. I've been coping well by wearing wigs (I was told that eventually all of my hair will fall out). My wigs are human hair wigs so it unnoticeable. But my question is how do you guys deal with insensitive people when it comes to your hair.

Yesterday, I was at a cookout surrounded by coworkers eating crabs. Well, this one girl kept asking, "What kind of cap are you wearing?" I was caught off guard and gave some answer but she insisted and proceeded to tell everyone how that couldn't be my hair because it's too pretty and it must be tracks or a wig.

Knowing how embarrassing this was others at the table, I tried to skip the subject. But that wasn't enough; she tried to get up and look at my hair to prove a point. By the end of it all, I was very embarrassed. What made it worse was that my coworker sitting across from me is currently suffering from cancer and has fully lost all her hair and wear wigs as well. A few of us knew about it, but this particular woman didn't and, at that point, I think I felt more embarrassed

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Hi J Loren.
My first first reaction to your story is that I want to resort with verbal or physical violence against your tormentor. My own experience with some thing similar wasn't so bad. I was at our clubhouse, where wearing hats inside the dining room forbidden. My own hairline is a crazy patchy stubble that I can't make look normal without a hat.
When a well meaning fellow member called me out on my hat (that I owe everyone drinks in fact!)
I told her straight up in a calm voice: I've got alopecia and the patches look awful without a hat.
She seemed quite embarrassed for bringing it up and apologized. Hasn't been an issue since then but I'll tackle it the same way next time it does.
Matt
