I found my first spots on my birthday a little over a month ago. Since then I have seen a dermatologist who has confirmed that it is AA. I have some questions and hope that some of you can give me some insight. Before I found my spots I wore my hair up in a ponytail everyday. One of my first thoughts was that my bald spots may be from my ponytail. Second thought was maybe my medication, it wasnt. Anyway, I see the majority of my shedding in the shower. I now wear my hair down and see some hairs on the floor, couch, clothing, but nothing that alarms me. I've always shed alot so never thought much of it, until I found my bald spots. The shower is where it can be a bit unnerving. Dont see much come out when I brush either. So here are my questions:
I see most of my hair coming out when I wash it. Is this wear most see it fall out?
Do I need to be more gentle when washing my hair?
Can I still wear a ponytail or will this cause my hair to fall out faster?
Dose scratching your head make the hair fall out quicker or is bad that I scratch?
I seem to be more itchy around my bald spots. I do have hair stuble growing on some of my spots, if I happen to scratch my spots will it make the hair stuble fall?
I know I have a few more questions, but cant think of them right now. Any comments that could be provided would be greatly appreciated! Thanks all!

Hi Haven,
Sorry that this happening - we've all been there.
I try to wash my hair infrequently when going through a "bout." And just try to be more gentle in general. Have you looked into a biotin deficiency - look at the connection with hair loss? Or D3? Or possible food elimination? I have been supplementing with biotin (15mg, as I was deficient), d3, vitamin B complex, hemp oil, and vitamin C. Take a look at your diet - in today's world many of us consume mass amounts of crap - I know that I did! Early on, I had a realization that if I wanted to figure out this whole AA thing I was going to have to heal myself from the inside out...and I have had success!
Good luck! I know at times it feels hopeless and terrifying, but time keeps rolling on and you learn to live with it. The hairs that you find you can check to see if they have a follicle at the end, nice healthy bulb. According to my dermo, hairs from an alopecia generally wither at the ends, as the follicle is still in the scalp.
I make zero changes with washing my hair. It is better to have a clean scalp than a dirty one!
Just don't scratch too hard - like don't break the skin and cause yourself to bleed. Otherwise you should be fine.
You can wear your hair up.
What I've learned with AA is that whatever hairs want to fall out will fall out.
Thank you all for your replys. I like to think im handling this well, and its nice to have a place to share thoughts, feelings, vent, etc. After spending some time researching and reading others stories/advice, I feel like I have a grip on things and know that all will be ok. Just have to stay positive and not dwell on the negatives! Thanks again!
