Anyone heard of this for treating AU? I just saw it on another board and did a pub med search and it didnt seem all that bad. Some studies are not good but others are positive. Its an old drug, I wonder why I never hear about it. examplefrom pub med:

Clinical and immunologic response to Isoprinosine in alopecia areata and alopecia universalis: association with autoantibodies.
Lowy M, Ledoux-Corbusier M, Achten G, Wybran J.

Abstract
Twenty patients with alopecia universalis, alopecia semiuniversalis and alopecia areata were studied for their immune parameters. Fourteen of them received an oral treatment with Isoprinosine, a synthetic immunomodulator. Ten patients showed the presence of several autoantibodies. No significant abnormalities in various T cell rosette markers were found, but T4/T8 ratios tended to be elevated. Erythrocyte antibody complement (EAC) rosettes were usually decreased. Treatment with Isoprinosine produced a clinical response, as judged by total or partial hair growth, in nine of the fourteen patients treated. It was striking to observe that seven of the nine responders had autoantibodies prior to treatment. These autoantibodies disappeared or decreased with Isoprinosine therapy. In contrast, only one of five nonresponders had serum autoantibodies. After treatment, both groups showed an increase in blood-active T rosettes. These results suggest that alopecia is a heterogeneous disease subdivided by the presence or absence of autoantibodies since clinical response was mainly obtained in patients presenting autoantibodies.

I have not heard of this but just sent this to my doctor to see if she has. Interested to find out if anyone has tried this. After reading some of the posts on gluten free, casin free diets I think I am going to give that a shot.....Where can I find out more about this..thanks.

I'm starting this medication, let's see...

any update?

Not yet, nothing changed so far...

Any side effects to taking this drug ?

Looks like the Isoprinosine study mentioned in this report (page 6) saw complete remission at 12 weeks in 50% of patients taking this drug.

Yes, I've posted the original study in another post. This Friday I'll reach 1 month and 3 weeks, so maybe that explains why there are no good news yet, or maybe I'm just not lucky. It seems that a particular group of people would be more prone to be treated this way.

Still, there are no side effects, it's a very safe drug. There's no problem in trying. Just print out the original paper and ask your doctor to start the treatment. Look for my other post on this. And keep us posted on the results :p

Hi divine_comedy

How are you getting on with the Isoprinosine ?

All is fine except that no hair is growing. The "experiment" will stop in one month. The dose is high but it could be that it's not enough. Or maybe it needs more time... Or maybe it just doesn't work with me. But I recommend people to try, it's a bit costly but good results have been achieved before.

Worth a shot definitely
