MD's treatment suggestion

Hello. I am new to Alopecia World and wanted to see if anyone had received squaric acid treatments before, and the results. I was sensitized to the acid on my arm two and a half weeks ago and it is still swollen, red and painful. There is no way I am going to allow them to put that on my scalp! The other option was two months of oral steroids and then immunosuppressive drugs. My immune system is poor as it is, I don't need meds to make it worse! I guess I'm wondering if others have endured the treatments and if they were effective. Research I've done does not look very promising. Thank you so much for any feedback.....Tracey

When i was 17 I was having regrowth for the first time in 16 years of having alopecia. To help speed things along i tried squaric acid and it was awful!!! Layers of my scalp would peel off and on top of it all of my regrowth fell out! It was one of the most painful things I have ever endured and I have had a compound fracture and 12 hrs + worth of tattoos!!!

Thank you Kayla. You confirmed my suspicions about squaric acid. I just can't imagine the pain you must have gone through. My arm STILL hurts from where they put the sensitizing drops two and a half weeks ago! That stuff is truly nasty!!

Hi Tracey! I just recently tried the Squaric Acid treatment and it didnt work out so well for me. When they did the patch test on my arm I had no reaction so my doc thought it would be ok for me to start the treatment on my scalp. Again I had no reaction. Two weeks later my arm developed a horrible rash, reaction times 10!! A few days later it started on my head, it wasnt as bad of course because they compounded it before I used it on my scalp but it was still horrible itchy, covered in rash, and always burning. Within 4 days of reaction the skin on my arm in the test area began to peel off, it freaked me out and it was totally disgusting! I had to be on antibiotics for 2 weeks, got multiple steroid and epi shots, and gobs and gobs of steroid cream. It just reacently started healing and scabbing over but it has been about 5 to 6 weeks of all this. My scalp is fine, the rash cleared up in about a week and just recently I've noticed that I have like a peach fuzz thing happening on my scalp! I dont know if the treatment had anything to do with that as I'm hearing peach fuzz is pretty common, but you never know. I had a horrible reaction but there are some people who are great success with this treatment, I think it really depends on the individual person. I'm definately glad I tried it or I never would have known and always wondered if it would have helped.

maybe it kick started the peachy fuzz. I know mine only started showing up after I started using stuff to stimulate the growth.

Are you gonne go back?

Im still working with my doctor, because of how strong my reaction was my doc took me off the squaric acid but im definately not giving up hope! :)

Yeah it's a trial and error thing with alopecia. I'm sure you'll find something that works for you. But I do believe that hope is the biggest component in healing. If it's your body attacking you then with enough positive thinking there has got to be a way to stop your body from attacking you, right?
