From almost no hair -universalis-a year ago to almost full scalp hair, a lot of eyelashes, and newly growing eyebrows, my daughters hair keeps growing.
We have been using low dose topical corticosteroid and Minoxidil on the scalp. I have also taken her to a Homeopath and a Naturapath. We have been supplementing her with mineral salts, multivitamins, Biotin, prebiotic, and Zinc. Also based on our Naturapaths advice and some tests, we have been avoiding dairy, soya, corn and gluten for almost a year. It isn't easy but is definitely worth it.
I am writing this because I remember how desperate I was a year ago. I didn't give up. As a parent, I just want to encourage you to keep looking for answers, keep looking for alternative treatments.
Please do not follow the treatment regime I wrote above. It was developed for my daughter after our dermatologists, homeopaths, and Naturapaths observations and tests with my daughter.it is an individualized plan. The diet part is particularly challenging because since my daughter is very young, we have to make sure that she gets her nutrients from other sources; a well balanced diet with almost no processed food.
We live in Toronto Canada, and I will be glad if I could be of any help to other kids with Alopecia Areata. I can also recommend our dermotologist, Homeopath and Naturapath if you send me a private message.
Thank you

Hi, it is so encouraging to see your post. I live in Ottawa. My son just recently developed AU. It is very tough on me. I have been trying very hard to deal with this. I would like to know your Homeopath and Naturapath. Please and thanks.

Hi Wind. Pls check your personal inbox..I wrote u there.

That is great! I live in Ottawa aswell and we went to see a naturopathic doctor and have been off of dairy and egg for about 2 months now. My daughter is also taking a variety of different vitamins. We still haven't seen any growth yet... she has been universalis since September. Your post gives me hope that she will start to grow her hair back. How long has your daughter been universalis for??

Hi Jules,
My daughter developed alopecia areata last October 2010. It qucikly turned into Universalis. We started with the corticosteroid creams in November, homeopathic supplements in December, and diet changes in January'11.
As of Feb/March of tis year the hair started growing in on certain spots, however falled out again. after many rounds og growing in and falling out, it started to grow nice and strong by the end of the summer. She still have few round spots without hair, also her eyebrows are still thin. I am very postive that they will fill in too eventually.
Let me know if you hav any other questions. I want to help in any way i can.

What kind of diet changes did you do? My daughter has a milk/egg allergy so she has been off of those for about 3 months now. We tested for celiac desease but they came back negative, but i think we're going to try a gluten free diet for a while to see if anything comes out of it. I pray everyday that she gets her hair back...

Sorry I just realized you mentioned the diet changes in your original post... I hope your daughters hair continues to grow and she never has to deal with alopecia again!
