Hi I've just joined and this is my quick story. I found I had a small patch when getting my hair cut approx 6 weeks ago. The patch has grown and 4 or 5 other quite small patches are now growing. I'm trying to decide on head shaving. My wife doesn't want me to and is quite vocal about the fact. True, a lot of people wouldn't know, but I do and I'm getting fed up with trying to cover patches and the hair falling on my desk and in the bath. I'm glad to find a forum of people with similar issues and would love to hear any advice. Thanks, Paul

Hi
This is a big choice and nobody can really tell you what is going to be the best thing for you to do.
In my experience head shaving can be an empowering choice but also one that needs a lot of thought as you are fully changing how you present yourself.
With patches you need to be aware that the patches and the places with hair will be noticeable even you are you shaved. (I see there is some ads on the side here about men getting these bits tattooed so they are not so noticeable).
Good luck with your decision.

I agree with everyone that has posted so far. I will say that the limbo stage you are in now is my most hated stage. The indecision when I am in that stage kills me...should I shouldn't I. Every time I finally shave (it has been 3 or 4 times now of regrowth then fall out and shave) it feels like a sense of relief. I get a sense of control over something that is so uncontrollable. And, being a semi-control freak that is huge for me. But, as others have said, it is a very personal decision and you will see the patches with the bald head.
Good luck.
I'm definitely interested, and maybe if you show your wife this thread, or talk to her about how much you feel out of control with this disease and shaving it might make you feel more in control she may understand a little more. Of course I am assuming right there that you haven't said that to her. I shouldn't assume. My husband shaved his head in unity for me and I didn't think I'd like him shaved, but dang, he is more sexy to me with the shaved head. So, now he shaves it whether my hair has grown back or not. Not knowing the reasons for your wife's insistence for you not to shave makes it hard for me to give any more thoughts on the topic. But, maybe she feels it is more a sense of control if you don't shave it.
I developed alopecia areata in June of this year. I initially felt a small bald patch on the crown and within 3 weeks 75% of my hair had fallen out. When it reached the 50% I just picked the clippers up and started shaving, without really giving it any though. It's empowering.
I am quite fascinated my the patterns that it leave on scalp; I could go as far as saying their beautiful.
Further, you will find that the majority of people are kind!
