I've known I had Alopecia for about 10 years now. I started having bald spots in 2001 and eventually got to the point where I shaved my head. Actually my brothers sat me down with a bottle of wine and shave it for me. =0) I was fortunate enough to get almost all of my hair back within two years and over the past 10 years I've had a small spot here or there and LOTS of shedding but nothing I couldn't cover up.

Over the past month I've started losing my hair again in large quantities. Right now I've got two severe bald spots covering the right side of my head and back of my head. I've also got one medium spot on the left side of my head and a small spot right in the front on my hair line.

I'm devestated. I'm married now (wasn't with my first severe episode) and have 3 kids. I've been going back and worth with the idea of shaving it all off again. If nothing else just so I don't have to worry about when the next bald spot is going to show up and if the spots I have now are going to stabalize.

I have really long hair, so tonight I'm going to get it cut short to maybe make the transition for myself and my family a bit easier... but honestly I just want it all gone. I'd rather be bald and get on with my life then sit here and wait for the next clump of hair to fall out.

Any comments or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with Rose Marie--do what is most comfortable for YOU! I didn't have to deal with my alopecia that way regarding patches for a long time. My hair fell out pretty fast within a matter of a few weeks and I was bald. Evenso, I have to say that being totally bald seems better to me than having spots or patches of hair here and there and trying to cover them up and worrying they will show. It may be just my opinion but I think when people see a patchy head or extremely thin hair it makes a person look ill or unhealthy; whereas baldness has a strength to it--it's more bold and since there are women who shave their head just because they want to, not because they have to. It looks more sexy I think than a patchy head of hair. Just my thoughts. I think your family will surprise you and may be more supportive of you taking charge and shaving your head sooner, especially if they know it makes you more comfortable. Good luck! We're hear to support you!
