hello all, hoping for some inspiration here.........been losing my hair since my birthday(oct 13th) due to work stress and bullying by manager!!!!!

been on sick for 2 months but i need to go back (skint).........lost loads of my hair and am now on dermavate for the irritation, have a wig but cannot wear it, can only wear a scarf, hat, bandana for a very short time as the heat causes more irritation....at 57 i am certainly no Gail Porter and it's damn cold in Wales :(

so what can i do? stay in over christmas? the same as i have the last 2 months? just so frustrated with all this.....derm says i have just over 50% chance of it growing back in the next 2 years (i know there are others worse off than me) but i just want a life of some kind now rather in 2 years time...with all this stress i may not even be here that long :(

can cope with the hair loss, i think, but what can i do with the heat issue?????

or do i spend christmas with the telly for company?

sorry for the rant but......don't know what to do next xx

Heat comes with being 50-something. Get a mini-fan to carry around, use cold compresses, wear layered clothing that you can peel off. You will have to work to eat, so this is a MUST DO situation that you will just have to "be here" to do. Telly can be fun, esp. if you invite friends over. Challenge that Worst Winter in 100 Years with music, games, journals, movies, dinner parties, reading, phone calls, guests, giving to others (Create surprises. Do you paint? Knit? Sew? Start a handbag line.). YOU are the architect of your life..."Life" doesn't deliver fun to your doorstep...you make your own.
the heat is only on my scalp, everything else is ok

thank you both, i am trying......i would love to go out, but the thing that is stopping me is the scalp burning/irritation, if that would stop i could wear something on my head longer than half an hour or so......

so a night out in pub/club/show can't be done yet till i can get it to stop....just so frustrated with it .....

Hello Sooz.... hope Christmas turned out alright for you after all!

Something you wrote got me wondering... you say you think you can cope with the hair loss, but you can't wear stuff on your head for long. So why are you wearing anything at all? If the hair loss is manageable but the heat isn't, you don't seem to have a problem at all.

But! You also inserted that throw-away line about being no Gail Porter at 57, which implies that you think it's OK to be bald if you're in your late 30s and Scottish :) Well, I (and plenty of others on here!) disagree! It doesn't matter what age you are (or where you come from!), your hair isn't the defining thing that makes you who you are. If that was the case, no-one would change their hairstyle, ever!

I know it's been really cold lately, so take the hat out with you. When you're cold, put it on.... when you're hot, take it off. Don't worry about others or what they think. In the main, they don't care anyway! What happens when you see someone with an unusual haircut? You might be curious for a few seconds, and then forget about it, right? So these days, it's the same for bald girls. How did you react the last time you saw a bald woman? Maybe looked for a moment, then turned away and that was that. So don't be a Welsh Hermit (similar to Welsh Rarebit, but not as tasty) and put your life on hold.... get your life back and get out there! Even if you do spend most of it on your bum having slipped in all the ice and snow. :)

Anyway, being 57 and bald is great. Old enough to know the ropes and not give a damn, young enough to still get out there and do it - and no hair to worry about! Bit of a result, wouldn't you say?

hi Norm, perhaps i did not make myself clear.....my AA only started beginning of October, i am at the stage where it is still burning/itching where it is going to fall out next....(dermavate helps a little)

i have a fair bit of hair at the front, but most of it has fallen out from the back, making the need to have a head covering of some kind on, i don't know at this stage how far the loss will go which is bad enough in itself, so i dont want to get rid of what i do have just in case it decides to stop falling.......

my comment about Gail Porter was if i had facial features like hers i would be able to, if it ever comes to that go hair free, not the age more the looks....

so far not been anywhere over christmas as the pain/irritation and itching would not make me good company for a night out lol

i don't know how long the burning etc will last, when and if it does stop, i will try to wear that wig, just wish it could be before New Year lol

Does alovera (on the head) help? Or wine (not on the head)? Aspirin (not on the head)? I imagine it is quite cold there, as I even have icy fingers here in California...so, how warm can you keep your room to go scarfless?

As to the wig, perhaps you can come up with a solution before New Year's Eve! Can you find a wig cap/liner at a local shop to cushion your tender skin from the wig netting? I am thinking brushed flannel, if they make such a thing. Perhaps you could sew something yourself! If not, whom would you trust to toss back the bubbly with you sans headcover?

never thought of alovera....what does that do? as for wine will stick to lager lol, it helps sometimes but depresses me others......sooooo i will be a bald alcohic at this rate lol
but being serious i will try anything just to have 1 night out and any suggestions are most welcome :)

although i have had the wig a few weeks, just too scared to try it, if i can't stick a scarf or hat, doubt it i could put up with that either.....i have always had very short hair, now i wish i had let it grow to cover the patches...we live and learn lol

thanks everyone for your replies, was hoping that i may get some ideas how to stop the irritation etc, i have been using 'dermavate cream' for the last 3 weeks (from the derm) which is a potent steroid and it has helped a lot but not enough yet :(

i was just hoping that someone here has been through this stage and could point me in the right direction....

yes Norm i really want my life back be it with or without hair ...... early days yet and just don't know what to expect next lol and yes i am a welsh hermit at the moment and fed up of it.......mmmm yes love 'welsh rarebit' , have seen some pics on here of women without hair and they look stunning :)

My daughter found using derm to harsh, her scalp is very sensitive even though she has olive skin... and had to stop. We were told that creams etc don't speed up the hair growth process, even though some grew back, she lost it again. :(
hi Amanda, derm told me that the steroid cream should calm my scalp down...then at next appointment in 3 months i will get a lotion that will cause an allergic reaction, swellling/burning/itching etc to try to stimulate the follicles...gee and that is what i am trying to get rid off...
talk about catch 22 :(
My thoughts are with you. The heat issue is hard, my daughter is struggling too, we are in NZ and she has been wearing a loose (kind a like a reggae style hat) open weave knitted hat. But still it is hot...Is there something you can put on your head for the irritation?  Maybe a soft fabric ? Does silk scarfs work? there must be something out there... I suppose you would not like to wear nothing...I have noticed a lot do - and many look so beautiful!  Find some friends who are comfortable seeing you as you are with no head gear on...and enjoy each others company!!  Hope you find some relief and be encouraged...
anything on my head drives me nuts and i scratch like a monkey, so embarrassing at Tesco....(great in the frozen food department) all i can do is try to get through this, i try humour but starting to run short of it, just want 1 night out over this festive period....

i know i am not alone in this and feel for anyone who has to go through it....
