My daughter has AA and has had this since she was 18 months old (she's now almost 8). She is very allergic to cats and also somewhat allergic to dogs. She has been around a cat (in our house) her whole life and doesn't show symptoms of allergy, probably because her immune system has responded to this constant irritant. It's indisputable that she has constant exposure to the cat allergen and this has to have had some affect on her immune system.

The question is, has anyone with any form of alopecia ever had a pet allergy, then removed the pet, to have hair regrowth or experience remission from alopecia. My husband would like to remove the cat but I feel it will be too emotionally difficult for my daughter (who loves the cat) with little chance of making a difference. But, I'm looking for other people's experiences. Thanks in advance.

Wow- I am having the same thought process. My twin sons 11- both have alopecia.  My one son  who has AU started experiencing hair loss about a year and a half after we got the dog.  I took him to allergist, mainly to see if he had food allergies- he was allergic to soy and dog.  I didn't see the connection then in 2014 but I do now.  I wanted to ask this same question, which is why I joined this blog.  Would love to discuss further.  My email is builderessentials@yahoo.com or I will be sure to check back for a response.  Thanks for posting!

Amazing , I've wondered the same thing about my dog . I know I'm allergic to her because when she touches my skin I immediatly itch all over . I'm so attached to her , though .
I've wondered for years if that was causing my hair loss .
Jmprincess- I wonder why their allergist never brought up a correlation. The whole purpose to our visit was to find out if there might be anything they were allergic to that could cause the hair loss. My son who has AU also has eczema and asthma with cold weather onset. In my reading, I believe this could be a trigger. I will update you, as I'm going to see their pediatrician and also a holistic dr here in Atlanta to get some professional opinions. Thanks for sharing.
I forgot to ask you when your AA started and how long after you got the dog? Have you had any success with any products? Thank you.
Can we private message ? I sent you a friend request?

that's strange.  My SO is bald from Alopecia since the age of 24.  He didn't realize that since that time, he's had allergies to dogs, broccoli, soy, chamisa (local plant here in NM), and cats.  Plus, he used to have this nasty eczema on his hands, face and scalp.

He had been receiving cortizone shots every 3 - 6 months, plus oral prednisone.  For more than 2 decades.

When we met, 10 years ago, that's when we figured this out, stopped going to the doctors for shots and pills. he no longer eats those foods, avoids dogs/cats, and for the eczema?  I found out this great stuff called "Loma Lux."  It's a homeopathic pill that should be taken every day, and it has smoothed out his skin completely, that and regular use of moisturizers.  (I make my own using shea butter/olive oil) for his face and hands.

If you're curious about the Loma Lux for eczema - look it up on Amazon.com.  Make sure you read the reviews before taking the plunge.  It think it's $25.00 for a months supply but definitely worth it.

As for myself? My alopecia really became worse when i became extremely allergic to the Juniper bushes that grow here in NM.  What's worse?  We've rented a house with a great big Juniper bush right in front of every window.  Also, lately, i've became increasingly allergic to dust.  The worse the allergy? yep, bigger the bald spot.
