Pixie cut for androgenetic alopecia?

Hi everyone,

I have androgenetic alopecia which is most prominent at the front of my part and extends more than halfway down my head. On good hair days, I can cover up the thinning areas and put eyeshadow or Caboki on my front part, but I'm getting sick of the anxiety of doing my hair and being terrified that my hair will move and expose the thinning, balding areas. It's about chin length now.

My hair stylist seems to think a super short cut would be good, but I am doubtful. I'm worried that it will just permanently expose the areas I don't want seen.

Anyone have a pixie cut with this condition?

Perhaps you can join our group here on alopeciaworld, under female pattern hair loss. Maybe someone can make a suggestion. I think it just depends on the person.

I know that when I get my haircut the shorter I go the fuller my hair tends to feel and look. I have Androgenetic Alopecia too....however, by the looks of my loss lately it's more like Alopecia areata on the more severe side. Had a biopsy and only the Androgenetic was confirmed. I'm so confused.....have you ever used Rogaine?

I am sorry that you have androgenetic.
My teenage daughter has the same diagnosis.
She has been using 5% foam 1x daily. I've heard better results if you use it 2x a day. Apply it directly to scalp, massage it in. About 40% people seem to get results.
You may wish to explore spironolactone 100mg. 2x a day, and yaz birth control pills. Seems to help stop hair loss for some.
It's worth it to go to a top dermatologist: we went to mayo clinic.
Hair treatments can take 6mo. To a year to take effect.
Hopefully new treatments will come in next few years.

Thanks so much for your reply. I feel awful for your daughter. It's one thing to be 51 and losing hair and another to be a teen going through that. I hope she is dealing well with the emotional side, that's the difficult part of this whole thing. I am in a really good place but I would like my hair back in the near future.

I will talk to my doctor about the Rogaine two times a day and the spironolactone. Thanks again. I am no depo-prevera for endometriosis so I am pretty sure the pill is out besides they don't like to use the pill with woman over 50 apparently they are more at risk for a stork and stuffy like that. It's hell to get old! LOL
