Hi there,

I have several questions concerning wigs, and while I am currently scouring the internet in search of credible information, I thought it prudent to consult people with first-hand experience.....

1) I anticipate having to buy a wig online, since I'm too ashamed to do it in person......so I need to know a lot before I make a purchase.  Is there a comprehensive guide to wigs and the various kinds available that you consider trustworthy?  I'm especially concerned with cap construction and finding one that will feel the most secure.

2) Right now the wig I have (only $50), has one of those straps - the mechanism seems somewhat flimsy and I'm wondering - does anyone think using tape or something else to keep it connected a good idea?

Along those lines, it also seems like the wig has become less 'elastic' over the short amount of time I've had it - or rather, the tautness of it seems to fluctuate.  I can't explain why, and I'm unsure if it's anything I'm doing with the strap.  Is this a phenomenon anyone else is familiar with?

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Hi Chromatic

I think it is really sensible to work out what your needs are with regards to wigs.  What are the things that you want a wig to do for you.....write a list.   When I first started looking for hair options for my daughter that is what I did.  These were the things that were important to me....security (without glues or tapes...my daughter has allergies), comfort (itchiness etc. was not an option either), easy care (washing and looking after needed to work for my daughter and me), realism (I'm a wig watcher...so realism was  360 degree requirement),trustworthy company (I knew I needed to work with people that understood and were there for the right reasons), 100% unprocessed virgin hair(I fully understood the differences in hair and what it meant to my daughter).  We found a wig option that worked well for us (Freedom Hair).  My daughter has been wearing this type of wig for a 11 years. It works very well for her.

Your list may be very different to mine....but do write one...as this will help you find a hairpiece that suits your needs.

Good luck with everything.

Hey Rosy,

Yeah, that's a good idea.  My list would be something like this:

- The absolute most important thing is that it stays on, even on a fairly windy day at the beach.  I have hair so I can't imagine tape or glue working.

- The second most important thing is that it sufficiently disguise/ cover my scalp (especially since I have hair), along with not being irritating.

- I would be okay with it only lasting six months to a year at a time, and I would say the hair should be of fair quality but doesn't have to be the absolute most expensive/ finest.  Once I find one that works I would be okay with spending the $ to buy another one.

- Given those things, I'd say it would be best if it be under $1000.

- In terms of style, I'd be looking for one that is a bit shorter rather than one of those long ones - I may need to cut it if it is too long.

I'll be scouring these boards in the next few days to see what people are saying/ recommending, but in the mean time,  if any people with experience (not salespeople advertising their company) have any recommendations, let me know!

I'd really like to learn a bit about wig construction before I buy one, so thanks for those links, Aimee!

Thanks for the advice everyone.
