I have alopecia areata and started getting injections in December in a large and very noticeable spot. My hair started growing back pretty quickly but I noticed after the second treatment I suddenly gained 5 pounds. I chalked it up to being newly married and happy and on vacation. Then after my 3rd round of injections I put on another 10 pounds in a matter of a couple weeks. I have been really watching what I eat, and getting 60-90 minutes of cardio at least 5 times a week and have still gained 2 pounds. I've heard of these injections causing rapid weight gain when used in other treatments but not for alopecia. Has anyone else experienced this? I really don't have any other explanation for gaining so much weight.

Hi,  two years ago I had all my hair fall out in the matter of two months.  Of course I immediately went to the doctors and ended up at a dermatologists office.  I starting getting cortisone injections in my head to see if it would make my hair grow back.  I had like 4 injections each 6 wks apart.  My hair did not at the time grow in where the shots were, but what I started to notice was that I was gaining weight rapidly and when I went back for another appointment for a shot I asked the nurse if the shots may be causing me to gain weight and she said "Oh Yes, steroid shots will cause weight gain" - I told the doctor then, NO more shots, they really weren't working anyway AND I didn't need a weight problem.  One problem with appearance was enough.  I could deal with one but not going bald and gaining weight too.  So I stopped the shots, found a good wig and hope for the best.  I really don't mind the wig so much.   Lost the weight went to weight watchers.  Took a year to lose the twenty I gained. ;>

Thank you for your reply! I was starting to think I was crazy! In addition to the weight gain I'm having irregular menstrual cycles and my husband and I have been trying to have a baby. I really wish I had thought to ask my doctor about the side effects before I got them but I was too excited at the thought of my hair growing back. I'd rather have a couple spots than be overweight after trying so hard to lose the weight from my first pregnancy.
