As far as I know shaving does not help with regrowth. I have AA and have had hair loss on and off for the past 32 years. Every time I shave it is really due to the mass loss of hair and how I feel my head looks with such stringy bits of hair. In the past eventually some hair has regrown, but not linked to the shaving, I think it just decided it was time to regrow. Right now I have 80% hair loss and have had my head shaved for the past 6 months or so. For me shaving feels freeing after my hair had looked so horrible. I choose not to wear a wig, but that is just my choice, so not for everyone. I have seen no real regrowth and some of my shaved spots are now getting smaller (makes it easier for shaving!).
Just a forewarning, if you do shave the areas you do have hair will look grayish on your head as there is still hair growth there. I know the first time I shaved about 10 years ago I was surprised by the grey spots until I realized what they were.
