The strangest thing happened to me with my Alopecia Areata. I was diagnosed eight years ago when I was seven. In those eight years, I had large bald spots all over my head. Not all at once though. I had the straightest, smoothest hair, but...here comes the strange part....for the past two years, from each bald spot, the regrowth was rough, hard, and very curly. Has this happened to anyone else? I asked 4 different dermatologists if they've ever seen anything like this before, and none of them had. My hair took on such a strange appearance that I got it cut into a short bob to balance everything out. I don't know what to do about this. Have any of you experienced this?

I just heard of a chemo patient whose hair grew in curly, after she had always had straight hair. So, I guess our regrowth would be in spots, instead of replacing all-over hair as happens after cancer treatment. Some people here get color change with regrowth. Maybe we should search "hair regrowth changes after chemo" just to see what it says.
Okay, I just looked it up. Did you ever have any shots in the scalp for your alopecia...in those spots?

Yes it does sometimes come back curly if it was straight or straight if it was curly. It doesn't matter if it comes out on it's own or is shaved off. Cancer cells are fast growing/dividing and chemotherapy drugs effect fast growing or fast dividing cells. But hair cells are as well. For some people when the hair starts to grow back notice a change in hair color, texture and/or hair being straight or curly. Usually the effect is permanent once the initial grow out is done. It really depends upon the amount, strength, and combination of chemotherapy drugs they received.

I had baby fine, dark blond/light brown hair that was turning to auburn as I got older. (Which is common in my family). I went through chemotherapy when I was 24. Lost my hair due to chemo. When it started to grow back it was a very light blond that quickly darkened to mud brown. It wasn't as baby fine but didn't become curly. After ten years I was tired of the color and started to color it auburn like it was before chemo.

The changes in hair are permanent due to chemotherapy. The chemo drugs effect the hair follicles themselves. One lady I met while we were both going through chemotherapy had a more drastic change in her hair. It was straight before chemo. After chemo it's quite curly and a lighter color than what she started out with. The only "permanent" change someone can make to their hair is through coloring it or permanents after chemotherapy.

My hair has grown back very cury and frizzy it takes me some time to fix it but I can make it look pretty nice. I had curly hair before it fell out but now although I have a full head of hair it is rather frizzy and dry but the right products help mine a lot. I have to use frizz treatments and deep condition mine. Congrats on the regrowth, I hope you find a way to make it work for you. Best wishes to you.

Rebecca can I ask you what the name of the hair, skin and nail vitamins are, and the steroid solution? I started losing my hair on Feb 2011 and by May 2011 had full AU =( I have also been diagnosed with UC/Crohns (they can't say which for sure) as of 2007 and Sept 2011 had my colon removed in an emergency surgery. If I could grow brows, lashes and some hair I would be so happy and many could deal with these other autoimmune issues a little better.
