hi everyone, i am 17 and i am going on holiday with my friends this year.. i have alopecia areata and at the moment i have two patches right on the top of my head. they are fairly small and i can cover them well with the rest of my hair but if i go swimming when im on holiday they will obviously be on show. none of my friends know i have alopecia and as much as im sure they would understand if i told them, i just cant bring myself to do that. any tips on what i can do about the swimming?

There is the buff that you could use (like the ones on survivor) They stretch and you could wear it like a headband and it would keep the spots covered plus it looks good. They come in several different fabrics. I love mine!
1) mention it to your friends. It's not the first nor the last situation where you want to live normally and live an active life. Keeping it a secret will debilitate you. Your friends won't care nearly as much as you imagine they will. They will react negatively if you are self-conscious, " not yourself" all because you've failed to mention you have spots of hair loss. They really will not care about your hair. They will care if you act oddly and stop participating in activities or seem out of sorts and pre-occupied with something but they can't figure out why you've seemed to change attitude about things. They will wonder needlessly what's up. Just tell them what it is and that it's no big deal.

2) really try #1. The anticipation of telling people and getting worked up about imagining rejection are quite exaggerated in our mids and don't really happen when you tell them. I have never met anyone who regretted telling friends. I have only met countless women who regretted that they kept their aa a secret. It has ruined lives and sometimes friendships and relationships. I meet very sad women who have given up all their fun activities and for what??? Because they are too embarrassed to just say they have some hair loss? Your friends will admire your candor. They like you. They don't care about your bald spots. You deserve to do everything you want. Don't compromise your lifestyle and love of life for some stupid bald spots.

3) No matter what kids of clips, hairbands, etc you try they may look like you get coverage on dry land. Once in the water, you have no idea what's gonna happen and you'll just be self conscious and worrying about it moving. You're a teenager and apperance matters. If wearing a full head cap thing like a buff or wide hair band seems to be ok style wise, maybe you can try it. But if no one else wears things like that on their head it will raise questions and again your friends will just get catty about why you have some hat thing on your head in the water.

ProThik spray is quite waterproof and baseball hats are not unusal at pools/beaches.

If you could tell your friends, it'd be a load off your mind probably. But I never told mine as a teen either (not until my 30s!) so I get where you are at.
have you tryed to wear a swimming cap.? x
