I've been wearing wigs for 30+ years and unfortunately have had a lot of bad experiences with several vendors over the years.  I only buy custom wigs with good quality human hair and use high quality salon products.  I buy from local wig specialists in my area (NJ).

Last June I purchased a European human hair full cap wig that is minimally processed (supposedly). I wash it 1x/week, using shampoo, conditioner and a leave-in conditioner from a high-end wig vendor. I also use a little light hair spray only on top.   I don't suspect I have product build up.

The hair has suddenly become a ratted, matted, straw-like tangled mess all over; not just the nape.  Ughhh.  Im pulling out all of my tips and tricks and nothing is working.  Deep condition by putting a shower cap with "air holes" and blowing drying isn't working.  Today I'm trying Argan Oil.  I did my typical shampoo and conditioner.  Will let the hair air dry on a head stand, then will apply a small amount of Argan Oil.

Question:  Should I apply a leave-in after the Argan Oil?

What are some other options?

If the hair was sewn in the wrong direction, is that something that can be fixed?

Btw, going back to the vendor is not an option.  They are the most ignorant and rude people that I've ever dealt with.  They automatically blame the customer for everything, and I have strong disdain for them.  They are so hostile!

Thanks for your help.

UPDATE:  After shampoo, conditioner and air drying, I used a small amount of Argan oil and let it sit overnight.  Then used AG Food Matter leave-in conditioner.   Unfortunately no relief on the rat's nest :-(

My only conclusion is that the hair cuticles are in the wrong direction.

What are my options now?

That sounds just like what happened to my daughters hairpiece when she was younger.  It had to be sent it to get the cuticles taken off (not sure of the actual procedure), but when it came back it was perfect.

Hi Gita

I really feel for you - I have been purchasing and wearing wigs for forty years and only last year ran into the same problem you have when a wig maker repaired an existing wig and the added hair went really frizzy after washing.  At the same time I also purchased new wigs and was told to always use a particular expensive salon only shampoo and conditioner.  My previous wigs both of which I alternated weekly and were human hair lasted for ten years!!! and I used a supermarket brand of shampoo.  On switching to this salon shampoo I have had a tangled frizzy mess as you state ever since.  Finally last week I went back to my cheap supermarket brand shampoo (for sleek and Smooth result) and bingo I have sleek and smooth wigs again. I don't live in the use so my brand which is NZ Pantene Sleek and Smooth is probably not available to you but I would suggest actually using a product which cleans the hair properly so you don't get build up but also leaves sufficient residue to cope with the frizz.  I have also had some hair placed in the cap during the repair back to front and the wig repairer switched them out for me although I believe that if you can hit on the right shampoo you can probably get it right.  Go back to an old brand that you have used successfully would be my first suggestion or try to get Pantene sent from New Zealand.

I also have struggled with arrogant and ignorant wig importers who do not wear wigs themselves and don't have a clue and are ripping us all off by misrepresenting products to us.  I have recently started importing my own with good hair quality result but the colours aren't right and that is hard to get right across internet.

Let me know if you want any more information from my 'travels' with such similar issues as you are experiencing.  Cheers Angela

Oliplex 3 available on amazon.  Then do your normal wash, dry & curl routine.  In addition, you can lightly spray with food grade silicone and work it in to further coat the fibers and help avoid tangling.
