Hi everyone. I got my first wig last Saturday and I'm having a difficult time getting used to wearing it. I love the style, cut and color - it's a beauty and cost so much that I feel like I should instantly feel comfortable wearing it although it makes my scalp so very itchy and in general I'm having a difficult time getting used to the feel of it. I buzzed the remainder of my hair Monday evening so that may have something to do with the itchiness. Does anyone have any tips or recommendations for getting used to a new wig?

Also I wanted to thank everyone for all the warm welcomes I received as I'm a new member.

I'm not really a wig expert, but did you try washing it--sometimes that helps. I assume it's human hair because it cost so much. Is it a lace wig? What type of adhesive are you using?

I can highly recommend https://dresslily.com particularly if you've got mid to long hair. The wigs are made with real hair and they are very realistic.

When I was still trying to wear a wig, I found that it was much more comfortable with one of those thin liner caps. I bought them at the wig shop, and I cut the band around the edge off because it dug into my head too much. It helped greatly with the itchiness. I also got in the habit of carrying a wooden chopstick around in my purse, and I'd use it to reach under the wig and scratch.

Good luck...I hope it works out for you.
Hi Rebecca, I started wearing my wig 3 months ago and had the same issues and thought I would never get use to it. I can say aftef 3 months it doesnt bother me anymore. The first month I had horrible headaches everytime I had it on and I thought to myself after spending all that money I would not be able to wear it but like to my suprise I did get use to it and now it does not bother me at all. Hope things work out for you!
DON'T SPLURGE! It is not necessary. Just because they cost thousands of dollars does NOT mean they are more comfortable. Talk to me if you want to find a great, less expensive alternative. I have tons of experience with this! This runs in my family and we've tried it all.
Whats your advice the wigs make my head itch very uncomfortable
I think I can help you. I wear a wig everyday and aren't bothered by them in the least- in fact I am thankful to wear something that keeps my head warm (I can say that now that fall has arrived and it is rather chilly outside). My mom and I both have alopecia- she's been bald for about 15 years and me for 2. She found that wearing a cotton headband underneath the wig helps tremendously, and I'd have to agree. I'm talking about the basic stretchy full circle headband that are about 2 inches wide, you can find them in flesh-tones or you can find your own fabric and have someone make you a few. They aren't hard to make at all. The headband keeps the edges from itching- I found the edges to be the most itchiest place on a wig. I first put on my headband and then apply my wig over it. You have to play with the wig to make sure it covers up the headband completely but you should feel immediate relief when the edges of the wig are not coming in contact with your scalp. Also I find these headbands come in handy in hot weather too because they work like a sweat band and absorb all your sweat- otherwise (if you have already lost your eyebrows) you'll find sweat just runs down your face and it looks like you are literally melting. (: Eyebrows are so under-rated! They serve quite a purpose and you don't realize it until they are gone! Anyway, I hope this helps. Feel confident in your wig. A lot of people on this site advocate for staying bald and ditching the wig. I just want to let you know that it is possible to wear one and feel confident in yourself and to feel beautiful again. Contact me if you need anymore help, I have a lot of makeup tips too.
Great tips, Natalie!

I'm one of the women who personally prefers going out bald. What I advocate is for women to have the option to wear a wig OR to go without.

I'm happy that wigs work for so many women, and that they're comfortable wearing them. I just want women like me, who aren't comfortable in a wig, to feel that there is a choice.

I have lots of makeup questions for you. My eyebrows are gone and I feel the fake ones look like stickers; my eyelashes are gone and I have gotten used to the falsies but the bottom looks strange. My face looks like it has totally changed. People keep asking me if I've been crying or am I tired. Help!!!! Also I have a Jon Renau HH wig that I really don't like. Paid a small fortune for it and looks like poop!! Any websites you suggest would be great. Thanks so much

Hi what are your makeup tips ?
Natalie, your tip is great - I'm going to find or make a cotton head band this weekend; I'm also going to try cutting the band off my wig cap so it doesn't feel so tight. I actully took my wig off half way through the day yesterday because it was driving me crazy- all my coworkers loved my buzz cut. I've always been a hat girl (hair or no hair) and have been wearing one when I'm not in the office but with my work I have public meetings I have to attend and would feel better with the wig on.... I guess I had too high of expectations for the wig???

Thank you all for you responses.

Hi Everyone. I felt really strange when I first got my wig because everyone just new "me and my hats". I still had a fringe so I just kept wearing my hat although I started wearing my wig. My best friends who knew I had problems with my hair noticed the difference but everyone else just thought I had died my hair. I then replaced my hat by a cotton hair band ...I soon got used to wearing the wig and went out without my hat....
I still take off my wig as soon as I get home, thats just me;)
Good luck to everyone. I will go and choose my 2nd wig on monday can't wait!!
