Hi

For those of us that have gone from alopecia areata to universalis how did the transition occur for you ?

For me it was about 9 months of AA in which the patches appeared and slowly got bigger. None of them ever got to the point where they joined up though. Then suddenly I started experiencing diffuse hair loss and all my hair fell out pretty evenly over my whole body over a few months.

I would be interested to hear how the transition occurred for others (e.g. sudden diffuse hair shedding or the patches simply all joined up).

Also, it was after taking cyclosporine that I noticed the switch from AA to the dramatic thinning of my hair. Perhaps cyclosporine was the trigger for AU to kick in, but then again, perhaps not. Who knows with this disease !?

I had 2-3 spots that didn't get better after a few months of steroid injections. Then one day I just started shedding. I shed my entire head of hair within a week. Over the next month, my eyebrows fell out first and then my eyelashes. And one day I just didn't have to shave my legs or underarms anymore.

Wondering if this is what is coming for me...Started Thanksgiving day with handfulls of hair coming out, within 2 weeks I had lost everything, I'm sure it would of been sooner but I had very thick hair, having it thinned every 5 weeks just to be managable. Have been noticing eyebrows and eyelashes the last couple of weeks becoming thinner, (eyebrows too were waxed every 3 weeks!!) Have not had to shave underarms for about 2 months now, still have some hair growing on my legs, at least for now.

Courtney - I read a posting recently by someone who said that taking supplements containing plant sterols and sterolins helped to reduce and also reverse some of their hairloss. I think these supplements are supposed to balance the body's immune system. Had I been going through the shedding phase I think I would have given these a try to see if they helped.

Seems to be the general theme so far then that the journey to AU is a sudden/rapid mass shedding of hair falling out fairly evenly rather than the AA patches joining up.

Still one of the freakiest things that ever happened to me.

u didn't metion your age when it happened. i am eager to know as smthng of this kind is also hapng to me

Shiva, I just turned 33 at the end of January...since my last post I have lost all of my eyebrows and just this past weekend my eyelashes...pretty much the only place hair is really left is my arms but
you can see some thinning now...good luck, wishing the best for you...
