Hi Guys

I have Alopecia Areata and my daughter was diagnosed with it 8 months ago. She is 15 and is finding it very difficult to accept, crying whenever a new bald patch appears and worrying about the future. She has 6 weekly injections which has led to regrowth in one area, still waiting on the others to grow back. I believe it would help if she could meet other teenagers/young people who are going through the same to talk to. Would anyone in the UK be interested in meeting up somewhere in the centre of England - say Birmingham? If numbers warranted I'm sure I could arrange a suitable venue. Meeting other people has helped me and it would be good if we could help each other.

Hi Sam,

I'm not from the UK - I'm actually from Canada - but I'm seventeen now, and have had Alopecia for about 7 or 6 years, so I definitely understand what your daughter is going through. I know I can't be of much direct help from across the pond, but I'd be happy to talk to your daughter somehow over the internet or whatever.

Also, when I first started losing my hair, my Mom always sort of did her best to put a positive twist on things. For example, for every injection I got, she would give me a peanut butter cup because they're my favourites and when we went to the derm I would get a starbucks and just things like that... I know that those are really little things, but it actually helped a lot, because I had those things to look forward to, and I had that time to spend with my mom. Maybe those things were more appropriate for a 11 year old, but still, the general idea of pairing the hairloss with something positive definitely helped.

Best wishes!
