Vitamin D Deficiency Affects Genes for Cancer, Autoimmune Disorders
Disorders
A study has linked vitamin D deficiency with an increased risk for cancer and autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis MS, and lupus. Researchers found, through mapping vitamin D receptor binding throughout the human genome, that vitamin D deficiency is a major environmental factor in increasing the risk of developing these disorders.
This Lene Andersen article makes me think our avoidance of outdoor exposure and sun activities, and our use or cortisone steroids, may make alopecia worse. Search this article and read all sections. Alopecia genes have been linked to these other condition genes (see 2010 research article in Discussions and my blogs).--TG

Hi Tallgirl.
Vitamin deficiencies can definately be a cause of Alopecia. I had my Vit D levels tested along with a lot of other tests and the only thing that came back as a deficiency was Iron Ferritin. I hope that everyone with Alopecia has had blood tests done by their Doctor and if something is low definately follow the Doctors advice and rectify the problem. My Doctor advised me to get my Iron Ferritin levels up to 50 which it is now (it was originally 23) and I now have lots of small white hairs growing on my head. Only time will tell but I am hoping I have found my answer.
Don't give up searching for answers, one day you might just find it!
Good Luck,
Debbie.
Going for labs today. I also had very D .All the women in my family are D deficient. My niece has poly glandular autoimmune disease, which has everything to do with her d level, she is checked weekly ,she s on a very restricted diet , shes not growing very much her nails are terrible and shes always sick. I can't pray enough .
My vitamin D was very low I went on 5000 IUs and my hair started growing back. My hair stared falling out again in mid ,feb. I shaved mid march,
no growth and today I got up and my eyebrows are almost gone! Going for labs maybe they'll be an answer !?
Hi Linda,
Did you continue to take the vit D supplement when your hair grew back or did you stop taking them? Good luck with your labs.
Debbie.
Hi Tallgirl
I think Vitamin D is definately part of the puzzle that alopecia areata is. My daughter has had low vitamin D and low iron (sparodically). Both deficiencies make her feel very unwell.

I did 5 years of cortisone injections every 2 wks. I strongly feel it depleted my immunity. The doctor I seen was #1 in Toronto, and she said, had I did the injections within 5-10yrs of losing my hair, I would have had a much better success. I am now 43 yrs beautifully bald :)
No they are not, and I agree with the vit D...I live where winter seems forever. I supplement with many vitamins, and feel I"m a very healthy eater. Here's food for thought, my spiritual teacher always told me, I was more evolved ...like wisdom teeth, hair is no longer a critical necessity. Blessings :)
I had my Vitamin D level checked a couple of years ago and the result was at the lower end of normal. I've been taking 2000 units of Vitamin D3 since then on a fairly regular basis. I'm overdue for a follow up lab draw. Any change you might ask....
Eh hard to say...
Can't hurt might help...
hi willow, can you give me the name of your doctor in toronto? i need to see someone who specializes in hair loss, the regular derms i've seen arent much help. thank-you!
Dr. Nadine Hradsky, she's German I believe, knows alopecia very well. She was down town Toronto. Let me know how it goes.
I take 1500 mg of chewable calcium with D...that makes 3000 IU of D daily! I have been doing this since I had an appendectomy in 2006 (bloodwork also showed anemia, but at that time the anemia may have been due to excessive you-know during peri-menopause). My healthier eating/vitamin (those senior chewables) habits for 7 years now makes me a fairly fit 60-year-old.
P.S. Yesterday, I grabbed some sun rays on my head by removing my hat at my yard sale when there were no customers. Old man across the street was probably blinded by the bald glare. Let's see if he stops flirting now that he has seen the REAL me!
