What do you do when you are sick and tired of wearing wigs, but too anxious about going out bald? I already struck out with trying to wear hats and stuff like that because I had some really bad experiences with those when I first lost my hair. I just don't know what to do anymore. the bad days are starting to outnumber the good days, and usually I would talk to my mum about it but everything's been really stressful for her with trying to sell the house and with my dad getting laid off so I just don't want to add to the stress level. I'm just so tired.

Hi Dielle,
Have you tried scarves?
I know how tough this can be.
Hang in there.

Jeff
Ya, I have tried just about everything, but I just haven't found anything that "fits" so to speak. The past couple of years have just been so frustrating because dealing with wigs always makes me so angry and everything is just even more frustrating because I have an identical twin that has a full head of hair. Its hard not to compare yourself to someone who up until middle school you looked exactly like. Whenever its time to get a new wig I can barely decide which one to get because I'm so angry and as much as my twin and my mum try to understand it just makes me even more upset. I'm just so frustrated and I don't know what to do about it because there isn't anything I can do about it because I have tried everything short of just wearing nothing on my head. For the most part I don't really care what other people think about me and for some reason it didn't really bother me so much when I was younger that I didn't have any hair but it just keeps getting harder to deal with, and its so hard when people stare or ask rude questions or avoid eye contact, or even worse compare me to my twin to my face. I just feel like I'm at the end of my rope.
Hi Dielle,
Sorry tou are so frustrated.
Do you have any support outside your family/friends? Like other people with alopecia?
I found meeting with others going though this has really helped me alot! I especially like going to the NAAF Conferences. Have you ever been to one? Hopefully you are talking with other girls your age going through this.
I hope you feel better soon. Again I know how tough this can be.

Jeff
I haven't been able to find any support groups in my area and I am the only person that I know that has this. So at least right now there isn't really anyone else besides my family that I can talk to.
in my opinion wear nothing, that's what i do and i don't have to worry.
I started wearing scarves like this:

I know how you feel about going out bald...but I got to a point after several miserably hot occasions that I just had to do it. It got easier every time, and now I don't give a flying ....what people think of my bald head. It's just me now. But, don't add to your stress level right now - it sounds like you have a lot going on.

Let me know if you want more info about the scarves. I still wear them when I want something on my head.

Take care of yourself,
Mary
I wear bandanas because I am sick of wigs as well. I had to order them online because no one really carries them at the moment. I find they are comfortable, they stay on and they give you a bit of a bohemian look. I am pretty active so I find this a good solution for the time being. I can dig up the website that I got them from if you are interested.
Go ask your Mother for help. I was also very young when I first got AA. My Mother was so wonderful , don't shut your Mom out of this. Beleive me there is NOTHING more important to her than your happiness and everything else will come after and she'll feel great that you need her advice, and you DO. Good luck sweetheart, and remember , things are never as bad as they seem. Having alopecia changes your insides as well as your out, you may lose hair but you gain so much character and compassion, which is always a good thing.
What a sweet sentiment! <3
Hi Dielle, I've been wearing a scarf/bandana for the past 30 years and it works for me. I'm a sporty kind of a person so I just wear my scarf/bandana and wear a casual cap or sport cap and I'm good to go. Guess with this alopecia situation there's only a few choices to do. Bald, toppers, wigs, scarf/bandana. Whatever is most comfortable for you and being that you've tried a wig already, the next thing for you to do is do the scarf/bandana, cap situation and go with the flow. Get back to me on how it goes.
