Just curious!

I have AU and have been completely bald for 3 years. I've found what makes me most comfortable is this: At home I will wear a scarf/sleepcap/bandana, and in public I wear a wig.

I just ventured out on a walk this fall in a beaubeau (exercise scarf), which was a big step for me! I still feel more self-conscious in a beaubeau than in a wig, but I got tired of coming home from a walk and having to wash my wig because I got so hot. I started to feel kind of silly wearing a wig to walk around the neighborhood, when almost all of my neighbors know I have alopecia anyway!

I only go bald if I'm very hot in the house or in a car, which is rarely.

Even if I'm the only one in the house, I'll put a scarf on (but I also wear full make-up if I'm the only one home, too - so I guess that's just me)!

I think we have a lot in common. I've had AU for 1.5 years and I'm pretty comfortable with it. Having said that, I'm always in makeup. I wear nothing at home during the spring/summer when it's just my husband and son and me. Anyone else around (family, close friends, etc) I'm always in a scarf or hat. I wear a wig out in public 24/7. I have no issue telling people about my disease, but like Rose, people stare at me and share with me their chemo stories.

Hi Aimee,
You're looking fab as always! At home I usually have my hairpiece on until night and then I switch to my BUFF. It's made of jersey material and can be ordered in a multitude of colours and patterns. It is what they wear on "Survivor" and I LOVE them. Super comfy. I rarely am without something on my head as I find myself really cold and I am still very self-concious at times.
Hope you are well and had a great summer
Jenn

Jennifer, where do you purchase your buffs?

I have a local shop here that I visit and she carries them but you can also get them online at http://buff24.com/. I've never bought mine there but take a look...so many colours and types!

Thanks, Jennifer. I will check that out. I do wish I could get comfortable enough to just grin and bear it and wear nothing to hide my baldness. I sat out for over 4 hrs. this past Saturday for my grandson's baseball game and it was HOT. I think that's the closest I've ever come to pulling it off in public. LOL

After I first started wearing wigs, I would wear a scarf on my head at home. Now, I don't wear anything at home. I will wear a hat when I exercise outside to keep my head covered from the sun. I shave my head, and I love it. I go out bald a lot too. Not one of my neighbors have said anything to me about it!

I always wear a wig in public. Close friends know- the rest of the world does not. I prefer people knowing but I'm not into the big announcement part.

At home, I always have a scarf on. Even when I am home alone. Nothing feels bizarre to me and cold.

My favorite hat are the prettied scarf from I think hats and more. They are solid colored-the color of my old hair- and they stay on and are very comfy. I also have lots of the Jewish women tichels or whatever they are called. I have hats with hair and sleep caps and bandanas and silk scarves but 99 percent of the time I'm in my prettied scarf.

I wear a wig to work and out in public. If I am exercising or swimming i wont wear them, even in public. I live in a condo building and i dont wear it walking around the building either. Most people treat me like a normal person- they dont stare or anything!

I only wash my wig every 3 weeks or so? I dont find they get gross after only a day? I keep hearing that on here and I find it odd

I've only wore a wig in public twice. My hair was brunette & beautiful. Past my ass..I lost it all in August last year.. two weeks it took for my scalp and my brows n lashes fell out towards the end of September ..really tough but its kinda hard to hide it considering its uncomfortable to wear a that long! So I said screw it..I'm going out bald..n I've done it to this day. You get over the stares. I own 4 wigs and they just sit in the package :p

@Natalie - your reply is personally very inspiring! I have had AU for over ten years. When I first lost my hair, I generally wore a wig in public. I tried at that time going out bald but just couldn't (likely because my condition was new to me) get beyond the stares. I lost my nerve and went through several years where I only wore a wig in public. I was so anxious about people at work discovering I wore a wig. Not even neighbours or friends would see me in scarf.

Personally I felt trapped and took steps to get beyond my comfort zone. I now wear scarves out in public and switch wigs ... I don't hide it.

But I would love to go out bald regularly and rock it!

At home, I wear pretty scarves unless I am hot and then will be bald.

Hi Aimee,
It depends on the weather. In the summer at home, I wear nothing. In public, a hat or bandana. I like it when its cold, because I think wearing my wig is the best therapy. I like changing styles day to day. I try to have fun with it! I have had AA, AT and now AU. It started at age 6, and now I am 41. It will get easier. I think it is important to do whatever makes you happy. I can leave the house without makeup, but I leave my sunglasses on even if I am inside. I hope in time you will learn to be more comfortable with yourself and can sit at home without your make up.

I usually wear my wig all day whether I'm at home or in public. If it's really hot weather I go bald at home..still wear my wig out in public though. I'm not comfortable enough to go without. As I'm getting older and wrinklier I find I love my wigs more :)
