I love taking long walks, and I usually just plop on a baseball hat and go. I don't want to get my wig all sweaty. But yesterday the winds were so strong my hat blew off a couple of times. It was embarassing and I had to hold onto it tight for the rest of the walk. What do you use to cover your head when you're being active? Is there anything more secure than a baseball cap?

Knit or crochet berets won't blow off. The wind comes up under the bill of a ball cap and takes it skyward.

I think a side slung, slouchy beret will suit your face well.

Have you tried large fashion scarves (at least 30 x 30) and tied into a bun at the back of your neck?

I wouldn't tie anything on top of your head even with ends rolled and tucked in.... it will elongate your face and you might end up looking a little like a tied up package if you can picture what I mean. You want someting that's soft-ish and brings attention either sideward or to the back of your head.

I know how to tie dozens of styles and will do demonstrations at our event in NYC tomorrow night.. I do demos at all our lunches, too. Don;t have my video yet.

Just take a big square scarf at least 32 x 32 into a triangle, point dropped down at the back of your head and flat side low along the forehead. Cross over the side ends of the triangle together at back of your head by crossing them over the center piece still hanging in the middle. Pull firmly. Then take the same ends and bring them around to the front of your forehead (I like to make them low on my forehead and not on the top of my head so much.). They can also be twisted individually before crossing them and tying in the front of your head. If it's a turkish style the scarf has fringes which give an especially pretty edge if you like embroidery/fringes. Tuck in the loose ends. That's it.
I just saw your post, Gail. Actually, that was my YouTube video in August 2008, "Alternatives to Wearing a Wig", where I showed how I tie Turkish scarves. Alas, my supplier of the ones shown in the video no longer has them, but there are others online. Just be sure it isn't too large - many of them are. As I show in the video, the best size for me is about 33" square.

p.s. Gail and anyone who's interested in these scarves, the way I tie them is based on a traditional Turkish and Bulgarian way that women tie their scarves. I learned about these years ago through my folk dance activities, and they sure came in handy when I lost my hair! The small hand-crocheted edging is called "oya". Let me know if you need any tips on what to look for. There are many sellers on eBay, but not all of the scarves are the same quality.

Visit my web and you will find a suction prosthesis called a tourmaline. It stays on my head without tape or glue and I swim, bike and ride with the sun roof open without fear of losing my hair! It is the best human hair unit I owned in 40 years of alopecia... truly wonderful! Dr. Bernice Williams
search for Buff -- multifunctional headwear . In two years they have never came off my head , or even moved . They are the most comfortable thing around. They have a huge range , are cheap and even come in fabrics for doing sports (ie sweating) in.

From the time I do my weights at the gym at 6 a.m. ...until I finish water exercise in the evening I wear my suction human hair tourmaline. As a professional I had to look good without a lot of fuss all day long... and for the pas 16 years I have made this special unit available to women and children with hair loss.. see hairconnectiontoday.com if you are interested,or just call me and I'll be happy to explain!! Retired and have plenty of time to talk 586 465 1458! Be blessed, Dr. Bernice Williams!
My hair integration system is very secure, I think I may go on a roller coaster this summer and let my hair fly in the breeze—just because I can!
Integration system are great if you have some hair to integrate it into, but when you are 90% bald like me, I have to wear a suction unit. Have fun on the roller coaster
I'm like 90% bald. The place I go to does hair bonding on girls with AU (i.e no hair at all!)
Now I understand. Integration is a term I understood to mean adding hair to your existing hair by pulling your hair through a net-like system with hair and bonding is simply bonding or gluing the hair to the scalp! My system stays on without glue or tape and I remove it each night. I wore bonded hair for many years until I became allergic to the bonding! Thanks for sharing, now we understand each other. Visit hairconnectiontodday.com and look at the tourmaline unit I wear, if you like!!
Andrea, I just saw this discussion - I was away in April. What I wear when I'm active, working out at the gym, or teaching my dance class, is nothing on my head. I realized very quickly after losing my hair that I get WAY too sweaty to wear even one of my Turkish scarves (see my video "Alternatives to Wearing a Wig" on AW and YouTube about these scarves.)

What I DO wear to the gym is a tank top I had made that says "Yes, I'm bald...get over it!"

I know the bald look isn't for everyone, but I've found it to be amazingly easy once I started doing it. Good luck.
