I began losing my hair over ten years ago, but it became very noticeable about 5 years ago. I have lost most of my eyebrows and the front part of my hair. I looked into getting a topper but the problem is that if it's windy, the top flaps up and the hair loss is even more noticeable. At this point I am seriously considering getting a wig, cutting my hair short and giving it a rest of styling. There are so many options out there for wigs. I found a company called High Definition Hair that is located near me that does custom wigs. Has anyone had any experience with them? Are there recommendations for natural looking wigs? Lace? Monofillament? Silk? HELP!

I was going to a salon where my system was a lace front coupled with bonding attachment that I loved, but I had to stop because the cost got to be prohibitive. I went back to wearing synthetic wigs, but this time with a lace front and adjustable straps in the back. (I've had AA since I was ten, and I'm 54 this year.) I've now gone to full lace units because they're lighter and I don't have to worry as much about tracks showing when the wind blows, etc. With the full lace units, I have to use glue and adhesive, but I've figured out a system that works for about a week to a week and a half before I have to detach and reattach. If you look on YouTube for a young woman with the name my0little0secret (or search for her under "how to wear a lace wig"), she has AWESOME advice on what works. Synthetics are, of course, less expensive than human hair, but it all depends on you and what you want. HTH!

And this is her Alopecia story:
I am in the same exact spot as you, Colere. Losing hair for ten years now and within the last few years it's become....increasingly upsetting. It's a shame because my hair was AMAZING when I had it all. Like enviable shampoo commercial hair. I basically feel like I've lost a part of myself...so depressing.
Anyway, I have been stalking High Definition Hair on instagram for the longest time now. I just emailed them about a virtual appointment today, in fact. To me, they look like the best I've seen in a while. I just can't with most of the wigs I see out there. Seems like HDH has a different kind of base that doesn't have lace or knots but is custom matched to your own skin. You can look on their instagram and see more because i think there are pictures that showcase the inside of the wig. I think all the HDH wigs are custom made so they shouldn't need glue, although they do use clips. I am interested to learn more after the consultation.
For me, I need a hair piece to be all things and everything. It's like a never ending search...and I'm sure we are all on it. Also, I can spot a wig basically anywhere so at this point I'm hyper critical of everything.
Let me know how it goes! Are you in the DC area?
Will do.
Nope, not in the DC area - unfortunately. Doing the virtual consultation first and if all goes well will fly out there.
Have my consultation next week!
My consultation actually got pushed to this evening. I am expecting the very high price (not looking forward to it, but it's not surprising to me). What did you think of the hair/construction/hair line, etc?
How did it go? I actually ended up getting a wig from someone else in the MD area.
