Hi there,

I live in the San Diego area and I have tried lots and lots of hair replacement places. I originally started with a custom hair piece created for me with European Hair and had it glued on a monthly basis....I went with that for about 2 years. I started getting major irritation from the glue and I'm not able to do that anymore. It was also was a strain on my finances and hard for me to keep up with because of the cost of the system and the monthly cost to attach it along with the hair ads that had to be done over time.

I now purchase human hair wigs that are not custom and they just are not comfortable. I take them off each night and put them on in the morning. Everyone said they look good but I don't think they look as good as the custom systems that I was getting glued. It isn't anything that I can swim or workout with. It just doesn't fit right. I am also newly married and find taking my hair off at night a bit hard on my self esteem. While my husband is great with it, I am still not completely comfortable.

I have been reading about vacuum wigs and other options. Does anyone have any ideas for me or know anyone really really good in the San Diego area that I can talk to? I have tried most places I have been able to find on google search etc. I have seen some places on the internet but I'm leary to spend a massive amount of money before seeing something in person as I have been talked into buying some bad hair systems in the past and have gotten a lot of broken promises from hair people.

Sorry for the long post, I'm just really looking for some guidance. Thanks very much.

Oh wow, good to see another San Diegan out there. The hair in your picture looks great. That would be cool to see what they are like. Peggy Knight's rep in Southern California is going to meet up with me eventually too. I don't have all the money saved for a Vacuum wig yet so I have some time. Just starting to look into it.

Can you tell me where you order yours from, how long they typically last, and if you don't mind, what the price range is, and comfort, heat? Have you worn any other types of wigs to compare it to?

I'm okay with spending the money on it but for my lace wigs that I paid over $1200 for with European hair, only lasted about 6 months or so before they started to fall apart. I for sure, can't keep paying that kind of money.

Anyways, I guess that's all for now. Write me back when you can. Thanks again for the info. This is so great to be able to talk to others that understand.

Nancy
I dont know about in your area but the hair specialists are really helpful at Hair and Beauty Canada.
Here is the website:

http://www.hairbeautycanada.com

They are based in Canada but an ecompany that works worldwide with hair loss customers. They design wigs out of their factory in China and have really good prices.

I have never heard about vacuum wigs. Can you tell me more about them? I am the same. My husband says he doesnt mind me taking my hair off at night but I am totally with you. It should be how you feel. Why are you not getting customj wigs anymore and how much did you pay? You can probably pay half the price at that store I mentioned.
I was paying $2000 a wig before and now pay $700 US. A huge difference.
Hi Nancy. Another San Diego alopecian! Yeah!

Check out my profile page for my story and pics. Also, my YouTube videos, if you haven't seen them "Alternatives to Wearing a Wig" and "Living a Bald Life" (a channel 10 news story from December).

I bought my wigs at Hair Unlimited in San Diego, but they're all the standard ones and not advanced replacement systems. As you can see from my posts and videos, I'm just not able to tolerate wigs. I wish I could. My main problem is the heat that they trap on the scalp. For me, just going bald has turned out to be the best thing. I wish you well and hope you'll find something comfortable.

I'm trying to organize a get-together with San Diego alopecian gals...interested?

Mary
Thanks for the message! I saw you on the local news and also so an article about a luncheon that was recent...I would be intersted for sure in a get-together. I read it about a week after it happened so I keep checking to see if anything comes up. Keep me posted, I would love that! Thanks so much.

Unfortunately for me, I work in the Public Relations business and going without hair isn't an option at this point. I have gotten more laid back about it though and occasionally go out with a bandana on once in awhile.

Keep me posted and thanks again for the message.

Yes, as I've said before here on AW, if I were still working in my former profession as an attorney and mediator, I know I'd be wearing a wig...at least in court and at the first meetings with new clients. I didn't lose my hair until after I had retired.

I just started a group for SD area women with alopecia. I'm in email contact with a few other women. We'll see if we can get together.

All the best,
Mary
Hi Nancy,

Another option would be the Amy Presence line of wigs. They are synthetic, but the "hair" absorbes water! It's an amazing fiber! I key to the AP line, however, in my opinion is the DEALER!!! This wigs are only sold my "licensed" reps, and I had a horrible experience with my local dealer in NC! I ended up finding a dealer in all places...Washington State. Monique's Salon has two locations, and a website. Monique and her staff are incredible!!! The AP line has a website too...www.amyspresence.com. They also offer Human Hair wigs (although I've heard the HH is just soso.)

I've also looked at vacuum wigs, both Peggy Knight and the Freedom brand. They are both made my the same manufactor in NZ, and the Freedom line is much more reasonably price. At some point I will purchase a vacuum, but will always have to have another opion for the HOT NC summers.
