I'm new to wigs.  Having hair loss from hormone issues.  I got one that I just love.  It's a synthetic. I wear a wig cap and when I put the wig on, there is room between my scalp and the wig cap.  Should it be flush all the way around or can there be room in there?

It's all a matter of personal comfort.  If the space doesn't bother you and doesn't look bubbly on top of your head, then no worries.  If the space bothers you or looks strange, you may want to try a smaller wig size.  Most synthetic wig makers carry petite and even extra petite sizes.

It's actually comfortable but I haven't worn it for very long because I'm not sure if I need to take it back.  I'm going into my stylist tomorrow to have another wig thinned out and I'm going to ask her what she thinks.  I don't think it bubbles up but there's so much hair on it, it's hard to tell.  It is a petite and they don't have it in a extra petite.  It's actually more comfortable than my "tighter" Jon Renau wig.  That one gives me a slight headache but I like it as well.

Okay, good -- I'm glad it's comfortable at least!  That's the biggest thing.  You and your stylist might want to adjust the ear tabs and elastic tabs to see if that helps with the extra room.  But if you're comfy and the wig is secure and there's no visible issue, then there's really nothing to fix.  You're good to go! :)

As you can already tell, synthetics are made in a few sizes -- basically 4 (large, average, petite, and sometimes extra petite).  But there's a larger range of head sizes out in the real world - those are just sizes meant to fit the majority of folks.  Ultimately, as you experiment with more wigs, you may want to consider getting a custom made wig.  Those are created with your specific head measurements and, usually, by taking a mold of your head, so they are snug to the head.

what's with those ear tabs?  I keep reading about them.  I feel them on both wigs.  Are they adjustable??

They should be and normally are. There's bendable metal inside the materials at the point of the wig that comes just in front of your ears. There are typically also adjustable tabs at the back of the wig (nape of your neck) that involve elastic bits that you can move to different notches to make the wig tighter or looser. The corners of the nape of the wig, you can usually find that same bendable metal to get the name to fit smoothly and snugly. If you go onto Wigs.Com, look to see if they have your model wig with a video showing the inside of the cap, with an explanation of how to adjust all the tabs.

I'll check it out.  Yes, I do have the adjustable velcro tabs at the nape and have messed around with those.  I just didn't know what to do with those little metal ones up by temples.

Took my two new wigs in to my stylist today and she thinned them out as there was too much hair on them.  She adjusted the one I was concerned about being too big and it fits well.  YAY, I don't have to return it.  It does bunch up a little big in the back but I can't feel it and you can't see it so I"m ok with it.

That's great!  It sounds like you've got a good hair stylist -- she's comfortable working with wigs and she's got your back. :)

Since you're new to wig wearing, just a quick piece of advice - you may already have this info, but just in case: When it's time to wash the new wig, make sure that you use shampoo and conditioner formulated for synthetics.  It will help your synthetic wig last longer.  Jon Renau has a line, and there are some others too (Wigs.com and WilshireWigs.com are a good place to look for supplies).

yup, I already bought all the stuff for my new wigs.  The Jon Renau line.  Shampoo and conditioner.
