Hi Tanya

Deciding which hairpiece is going to work for you and your lifestyle can be difficult, as the information out there is often a little confusing.

When I was looking for my daughter I first worked out what was most important to her and her lifestyle. Some of the things we worked out together may help you to find the hairpiece that will work for you well.

Realism - very important to my daughter - she decided if she wore a hairpiece it had to look realistic in every way possible. She has always felt comfortable with the choice she made and still does.

Hair quality - it had to be extremely good hair quality as we noticed if the hair quality wasn't good it effected the way the hairpiece looked. This was more from me looking at my daughter. It was something I noticed when she moved, not when she looked in the mirror at herself. That static/still image never told the whole story. The way the hair moved was an enormous neon sign for me with regards to realism.

Security - this was extremely important. We both felt when the choice is made to wear a hairpiece by somebody - it's a little like taking some control back about the way people want to present themselves. To feel like you could loose your hair while doing an activity is not something my daughter felt comfortable with. To be outed when you least expect it was unacceptable to us. My daughter prefers to tell people when she feels comfortable. Her hairpiece of choice lets her make that decision. Sport and activities were something that we had to make sure worked with her hairpiece. With her choice it has worked well.

Comfort - we wanted something that did not make her hot, itchy or uncomfortable. Even though as we have moved through our journey with alopecia, both her and I realise that all hairpieces (her choice as well) are hotter than no hair or growing hair. That is a fact of wearing something on your head. Her wig of choice did not make her hot and she has never complained about heat in it. She has been wearing them now for 7 years.

Ease of care - this was another big factor in our choice. All hairpieces require maintenance, but we wanted a hairpiece that was easy care and easy maintenance.

Durability - We were looking for something the lasted well.

Flexibility - We wanted a hairpiece that was able to be worn in different styles, high ponytails, updo's for balls, french plaits. We really wanted something that we could do these type of styles in. She was 12 when she lost her hair and at that age ponytails, plaits/braids were the norm for her age group.

Price - In our experience our hairpiece of choice has always been extremely good value for money. Her first hairpiece is over 5 years old and still lovely, her second is 31/2 years old and beautiful, her latest is 20 months old and fab. Her first two hairpieces have received 1 repair each the newest hairpiece does not require any repairs at the moment. So she now has three wearable wigs that work for her and her lifestyle.

I hope the above information help with your search for a hairpiece that can help.

Hey, Rosy, What kind of hair did you opt for your daughter that can last that long? I am amazed, but that's great. I would say it had to be human hair to wear in updo's and pig tails..let me know and thanks so much.
What kind of hairpeice is she wearing now? I just need some help to decide what stays on the best.
I have a vacuum piece and it is awesome. I am extremely active and just wore it for my running...no problem. I usually wear a buff and cap when I run but I was in a campground and didn't feel like switching. It is awesome.
Hey, Jenn...are they really hot?? I am in FL don't know where you are. It is heat index of 110 here today!! Are they appropriate for someone who has some hair, or just for people without hair..since mine is shedding more and more, female pattern hairloss..cost?? Where did you get it?? I am also concerned about taking care of human hair..I mean "someone else's human hair" lol...
My bonded on hair system can be worn with no hair underneath or integrated into your existing hair. It stays on all the time and requires monthly maintenance. It isn't hot at all and I can drive my car with the moon roof open or exercise with it on, even ride a roller coaster (although I haven't tried that one yet.) The only thing I would worry about doing is underwater swimming, as I think it would probably loosen the glue and tape, but I could live without doing that.

I love the fact that I can wear it to bed and 24/7, that and security were very important to me. I love my new hair system! p.s. I have some of my own hair in the back and can wear it in a ponytail or bun.
I take it this is human hair?? What about the inital cost, and monthly costs? Sounds pretty expensive..I know wonders can be done if you have deep pockets ): and the time. But I am interested in the details. Is there info on the web about this?? Thanks
Yes, it is human European hair and "barbie doll blonde" as you put it in another post. Initially it cost $2500 and this piece should last 1 to 2 years. The monthly visits costs $100 and I like to give the girls a little tip. I allow about 2 hours for the visit.

Here is a link to the place I go to, Hair Systems of New York http://www.hairsystemsli.com

Wherever you live you should be able to find a similar place, but anyone looking into doing this, make sure you find the place offering the best quality for the best value and don't be afraid to bargain with them a bit. Also, ask to speak with some clients that already have the system. Ask them how they like it, ask to feel it and note whether it looks good or not. This is a big investment so don't be shy about asking questions and taking your time.
I am not finding it hot. It seems to take on the temperature that you are at the time. It is above 30 degrees here and humid and on those days they do feel warm but so far I am loving the hairpiece. You do need to be completely hairless. I find this piece is easy to care for as it feels and acts like my own hair. You get to choose the color, the wave pattern and many other things when you buy this custom hairpiece. It is pricey, but you can talk to a freedom wig rep as the cost varies per length. But I love it!
I love mine too...wore mine swimming today...didn't move. they are pretty amazing!
wow , as a mom with a gorgeous Teen with Alopecia, I am impressed on all your information provided!! I have gone through the same exploration, and ended up with Vacum seal "prothesis" for my daughter, Isabelle, from Peggy Knight Solutions. We have tried many other options, and nothing can compare!! She has been wearing them for ten years now.
Hi

The hairpiece my daugher wears is a Freedom vacuum hairpiece. :) Sorry forgot to put that bit of info.
