Hi all,

I'm pretty new to this forum and so far it's one of the best sources of information and help that I've found (better than most doctors). A little bit about myself, I started loosing hair 4 years ago at 18, just the typical hairline recession associated with male pattern baldness. I started to take "propecia" a year after and was on it until last February. Unfortunately, two years after starting the drug I noticed my hair thinning (miniaturizing) on my entire scalp, hence why I stopped taking it. Since then the hair on my scalp has continued to thin and fall out easily, I can run my fingers through my hair and get about 10 hairs without pulling on them (lose maybe 250 hairs/day). This past June, I noticed that all of my body hair was getting finer and also falling out more easily. All of the hairs that fall out are thin/blonde at the root and thicker/brown at the end with a small white bulb (seems like dead skin) at the root. I've been shedding and thinning for over a year now however there's still no completely bald/smooth spots. This confuses me because from what I've read most cases of AA start with completely bald patches. My dermatologist "strongly" believes that it's a case of chronic telogen effluvium from the propecia, however, I have a really hard time believing that because I'm still losing hair at the same rate, and it's miniaturizing which isn't a trait of telogen effluvium as far as I know.
I'm curious as to how any of your AA experiences have progressed, were the shed hairs like the ones i described? Was it relatively slow? Did you have miniaturization? How many hairs fall out a day? I really just need some other cases to compare to in order to feel more confident in my diagnoses. I can assure you that any reply from you guys will be more helpful than anything the careless doctors have told me. Thanks a lot.

kyle,
for us guys, it is a little easier to deal with, but harder to find others willing to talk about it,so this is a big first step towards acceptance. i have been dealing with this for 6 years and had bald patches for 2 years before shaving it all, the body hair left a year ago.now everything is coming back i got used to it all being gone and kind of hope it will go again. although i would like my eyelashes back . everything gets better with time.

HI Kyle,
You can read my history in detail on my page. Here's the Readers Digest version.
Full head of hair for 43 years then one day a small round bald spot. More and more round bald spots connecting to each other and within 3 months no hair whatsoever.

Hi Kyle,
From the research I've done your dr is probably right. It seems as though alopecia is the inflammation of the hair follicle, where it becomes so inflamed that it no longer holds the hair shaft. Typical alopecia hairs will not have the bulb (follicle) that you describe on the end of it, as it is still in the scalp and the hair has fallen out due to inflammation. From what I can tell (and I am no physician) if you have bulbs on your hairs then you may have telogen effluvium.

Hope this helps!
