I was just diagnosed with AA on May 12th 2009. I shaved my head because it was very depressing to watch my hair falling out in clumps. But I have been reading some of the discussions on here and someone said that they started out with AA and now have AU. I was wondering if anyone knows more about this topic. Is it a progression thing?

Hi Kristen I also have AA and from what I know about this condition it can start off as AA and stay that way with the patches coming and going and in some cases it can become AT or AU. In my case what had happend was I started off with just 1 large patch and it got worse before it got better. One year later I am again dealing with 5 med-small patches that only seem to be getting bigger. I think your very strong to be able to just shave your head .I know it's hard to wake up every day thinking how much more is going to fall out today. So yea best of luck and I hope the information is of some use.
Hi, Kristen. I will tell you that I have had four episodes in 23 years. The first when I was 24, the second when I was 26, the third when I was 37, and this one started when I was 46. I have had two very long stretches with a full head of hair in between. In 2000, I had about 80% hair loss and now I am about at 30%. I am able to cover my baldspots by tying my hair in a little pony tail over them this time. Each episode has been different for me. There is no real pattern, as far as I can see. I think it helps that I have been through this before. I have been able to take this episode in stride.

The best thing is to have this kind of suppport. It makes me feel more "normal".

I hope this helps!

Hi Danette,

I'm curious about how your hair started to grow back. Right now I have hair growing all over my head, but at different lengths (I shaved it all, even the hair that did not fall out) but the shorter hair is just a white fuzz and does not seem to be growing anymore. I don't want to get too excited that it might be a sign of regrowth. I also have some hair that is growing in at a normal rate, but pure white (the rest of my normal hair is red) I'm very curious about how other people with AA have seen hair regrowth, or if anyone else has has this 'baby-down' hair growing in. Is that how your hair grew back in, or was it immediately the correct texture and color?

Hi Danette, I lost my hair 2 years ago. I also shaved my head. I lost most of it but had patches that didn't come out. when it first came back, it was white and baby like. I was convinced that it was coming back grey...I was just glad it came back. I used dye on it to keep it all the same color but eventually it came back the same as it was...and as thick. My hair loss was due to stress. Although I have totally change my lifestyle, still have a sometimes stressful job and just recently getting some new patches. This time my doctor gave me something to help when I feel stress is getting the best of me. I can feel adrenaline rushes more than the normal person. Anyway, I hope this info helps...best wishes to you! Barbara
Hey, there...I did the same thing. I was tired of finding bald patches and shedding all over the house. So I just shaved it off. It's actually not so bad for me. It takes a little getting used to, but you'll find that lots of people will compliment you on it! I do. I know that AA can progress to AT or AU, but I don't believe there is any way to tell if it will happen, just a wait-and-see kind of thing, nature of the beast. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not. I noticed on me I tend to lose a little more each time. You're beautiful!!! Good luck and don't hide who are are...
Thanx ppl. I really appreciate the feed-back. I love this sight. I was seeing everyone else with bald heads that gave me the confidence to show off mine. Ok so I got this really long, black scarf thing and I cant figure out how to tie it on my head. Any ideas?
I have a tough time with long scarves because I never had long hair (even when I had all of it) so I can't get used to the long tail of the scarf hanging down. I do like the look of making a 'bun' at the back of your head, by wrapping it around a bunch of times, but it might be too long for that. I make my scarves from quilting fabric, so I make them a bit shorter to avoid that - and the material stays put better.

Hi Kristen,
I have regrowth and yes it is blond and very fine baby hair after a couple of weeks it turned dark
but still baby fine, i think it progressively gets back to your normal texture. Takes some times, months
Kristen,
I have AA also and mine is comming in white! I have auburn hair all my life and its so sad to see it shedding off of me every day.Its so beautiful color..will never have it again.
Might shave it off when it gets bad enough...But do hope our hair does come back and change to our usual hair color Kristen!
WE GO GIRLS! :)
For me it has been somewhat like that. I had 2 or 3 spots in the back behind my ears when I was 12-13. It took a few years to grow back in with monthly cortisone shots. I would say I had a full head of hair by 17. The next time I found a spot I was 23. It's been about a year an a half and I have had many more spots than the first time. I have had regrowth as well. There were times I thought I would just shave it but I didn't have the guts. I have the majority of my hair between what didn't fall out and my regrowth, it's just difficult to style and so i wear a wig. When I did research online after finding my spot I read a story about a girl who had a similar experience to me. She had 1-2 spots at puberty then it came back in her early twenties but for her it was totalis. By 25 she had universalis. I have yet to hit the totalis stage, I thought I was but my doctor explained that I would have lost it all by now. I just noticed it being more aggressive this time around. What's very unfortunate about this condition, besides the hair loss, is the lack of knowing what will happen next. I believe strongly in planning and this has totally thrown me for a loop. How has everyone else dealt with the lack of control?
Hello; I just stopped by to say Hello. Have a wonderful week. God bless you.
