Hii,

I was just diagnosed with chronic Alopecia Totalis and it’s very hard on me. My dermatologist wants me to start cyclosporine or methotrexate. Both medications require constant monitoring and can make me feel very sick. I don’t know if i should take it or not. Is it worth it? Have any of you started medication? What was your experience like?

I have Alopecia Universalis. I’ve taken both, but not at the same time. I was started on cyclosporine but didn’t have any regrowth after taking it for a while. My dermatologist switched me to methotrexate and after taking it for a few months, my liver enzymes became elevated and I had to stop the medication. I will say that the frequent blood draws got old really fast. I didn’t have regrowth on either medication.

Thank you for your response. I’m sorry to hear it didn’t work out for you.

I was on methrotrexate and had full regrowth and very little side effects! But then came corona and I had to stop because it lowers immune system. All hair fell out again. And then I got pregnant. But now i'm going to take it again.

Hello,

Please refer to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation's information on available treatments on the following website pages:

https://www.naaf.org/available-treatments-2/

https://www.naaf.org/other-treatments/

Note that there are now two FDA-approved treatments for alopecia areata: Olumiant (baricitinib) and Litfulo (ritlecitinib). NAAF has a recent webinar presentation that discusses the most up-to-date information on these treatments.  The webinar is available here: https://www.naaf.org/watch-learn/upcoming-webinar-king/.

Good luck!

Thanks Gary!

Thank you

Thank you for your response. Good to know it worked for you and that you had little side effects. Hopefully it will work again!
