Hello fellow Canadians!

I received JeezLouise's question about where to get lace wigs, and thought it's a good question to post as a discussion. This way more people can read and update the answers in the future.

I got my hair pieces from www.TopLace.com. I used to think they were great, up until my recent order, where the price went up. They said I somehow got undercharged before!

Still, it's a good place to get high quality wigs. Also, it is still reasonably priced compared to most other lace wig sources. They also sell vacuum wigs, which I haven't tried yet.

I encourage you to check out their user forum first. Most of their customers have male pattern boldness, and they are VERY serious about making their pieces seamless to the point of perfection.

The forum was the only reason I was able to buy a wig from an online site. I read about other people's experience and decided that it would actually work! Here's what you need to do if you haven't ordered a wig online before:

1. Check out the site and the forum to determine what wig base you want. (Email them to get a quote for a full cap. Their site needs updated as it only shows prices for partials.)
2. Check out the glue and tape you want as well.
3. Make a head template with ceran wrap and tape (More instructions on the toplace site).
4. Place an order and mail your template.

My recent order is an iLace full cap. Their price quote for two different lengths are:
10" - $365 USD
12" - $415 USD
Plus $20 USD for S&H

5. Wait about 6 to 7 weeks for it to arrive.
6. The wig won't look natural when you put it on at first. Wash it, part it the way you want, wear it a few times around the house. Then, if necessary, go to a trusted hair dresser to get it cut and styled. I used to not go to a hair dresser, but now I find that my hair does look a lot more natural after it's been "worked on".

I'm looking into www.HollywoodLace.com as well. It's a similar but newer company and they offer better prices. But they don't have a forum, so it's harder to determine the quality of their products without buying.

So here's my two cents. Good luck with wig shopping. I'm looking forward to read about everyone's wig resources as well :)

Hi Louise,

1. Yes the wig comes with some extra lace on the edges. I cut it to leave about 2, 3 rows of lace before the hairline starts. It sorta depends on the density though.

2. For women, 90% is about average. I'm still figuring out. The best way is to email them a picture of someone with the hair you want :)

3. My wigs last me over a year, and that's one at a time, not two! I've only gone through 3 with toplace. So I think they are pretty sturdy. Other people on the forum (mostly guys with partials) use more glue and probably wash them quite often, so theirs seem to last 3 months.

For me, the poly edges at the back breaks first. Recently I put really strong tape on my current one when I went clubbing, and when I took it off (not so carefully) it ripped. Still wearable but not as secure. Now I know to be more gentle ;) (That was the first time I had to start preparing for a new one only 7 months in.)

Also, the Super Fine Swiss lace is more delicate than the other laces. I've read that people accidentally ripped theirs. I've never had that issue though.

Sometimes, what makes it necessary to get a new wig is that the hair density and quality has changed, not the base itself. You can send it in for density add. As for the hair quality - for me it could've been cuz I bleached the heck out of it lol! Do have a back up though, or start preparing your new wig while your current one is still ok, that way you can send one in for repair and adjustments.

4. Forgot to mention - only use salon quality shampoo. Matrix is my favorite. AG is good too. They don't cost too much, considering you only need to shampoo your hair every week or every two weeks.
Hi Everyone!

I have suffered from mild alopecia myself various times over my life and as a result, I learned to make lace front wigs personally. I custom make them from scratch based on your indivdual measurements and I have just started offering my services so that everyone can have a more personal result.

I consult and also do attachments of existing wigs to ensure that you have the right fit. I offer a very personal one on one service, and each wig is specially made to your personal specifications-not a general one size fits all. Each wig is made with human or synthetic hair.

Feel free to contact me if you are interested in learning more. 647-746-7696
Hi Everyone! I am new to the site and just embarking into the world of wigs. I have had alopecia (female pattern baldness, or adrogenic(?) I believe) for many years now and am finally SO tired of my short hair and show-through scalp. I want a wig. I have just begun the research to learn about wigs (the information is overwhelming!). I haven't visited a store or had a consultation yet, but am hoping to do that very soon. Has anyone heard of Continental Hair in Toronto? http://www.continentalhair.com/home.php I am considering going for a consultation with them, as well as with another much smaller, local company.

I am trying to read up as much as I can about wigs before I go - what to look for, things to consider, what kind to get and all the information is daunting. I don't even know what some of the terminology means. I appreciate all the opinions and tips that I've read so far here on this site. I'm so glad I found this site, and this group!

Thanks! :)
