Hello,

As this is the only current place we have to discuss things (website delayed due to snow,EQC and life issues but shouldnt be too far away) I was talking to a parent in Auckland a week ago about organising some form of kids event. This could be as simple as day out initially to some event centre (Zoo, Private Farm, Amusement etc etc) somewhere in NZ (easy to get to) where the kids can play and be themselves (Prefarably at a private environment so everyone can feel like no prying eyes) and then something like a BBQ lunch etc so the parents can have a chinwag, cry, laugh etc etc and talk to other parents.

I guess the issue I can see at the moment is that there is no clear indication as to the number of kids in NZ with Alopecia (I know of 7 or 8) but I guess if I dont start finding out then we will never know.

If there was such an event who would be interested ? any ideas of length of time ? location ? anything :) ?

PM me if you would like to make a private reply etc

Hi Paul

What sort of age group are you looking at Paul?? Do you want to include children, tweens and teens??? Or have you something else in mind. Let me know as I think I should be able to help with some numbers - possibly. :)

I don't know really lol. haven't really thought about it At first it would be open to anyone I guess, the kids can be off having fun doing "something", and if AA adults turn up they could have a chat over a coffee, guess it all depends on the facilities of whatever place we find.

Alternatively the event is just a bbq or such that has something extra there for the kids to do while the Adults chat. Your know me, am just trying to get others thoughts without thinking too hard about it :).
Ok, understand.

My thoughts around this is that it should be open to all who would find it helpful to attend. (all ages, families etc.).

A few years ago I organised a wee get together in Auckland at a restaurant, that went well for everybody. Parents, teenagers, children. Maybe something over a lunchtime with somewhere nice for the younger children to play (even something a little organised for them) so parents/ and adults can have a wee chinway. I know PCAF have had great response with Pizza nights. Easy for everyone.

ummmm... location - where you get the best response? anything... not a lot lol

Hope that helps a little.

Hiya, i love that everyone is on the same page here, i have been thinking of trying to find my daughter some friends "like her" to show her she is not alone. She has just turned 6. We live in Hamilton and i know of a couple of 13yr old girls that would definately be keen and a 19yr boy who might be interested....i know his mum is!
Auckland is good for me its easy enough to get to from Hamilton. i don't think i could afford to take my family out of the north island. But it all sounds fantastic, Pot luck lunch would be perfect, i'm sure Rainbows end, waiwera hot pools and auckland zoo have areas you can reserve that have BBQ's Even a big playground or park...possibly a beach in the warmer months could be an option aswell.
Look forward to hearing other ideas and eventually meeting you all.

Hello :)

Well I'm certainly not a kid any more, but I'd love to be able to help young people & families if I can in any way!
Keep me posted on what's happening!
Cheers Bex :)

Hi, not sure if his went ahead, but I am new to this site and would be most interested if you are thinking of doing another event.

cheers
Andrea

Hi,

I didnt actually get that much feedback and then I've had a load of issues due to the earthquakes (insurance claim excess'es really do suck !) but hopefully one day we can get something organised

Hey Paul. Im no kid myself but happy to help in any way. Transport, research etc. Just shout up and let me know.

Carl.

I would be keen to make contact with other families that have a child with alopecia. My daughter is 11 and has had alopecia since she was 8. We live in Manawatu.

Am a bit late to join the discussion I know! But my daughter is 8 and was diagnosed age 3. We live in Wellington. If anyone knows of any other children with alopecia in Wellington it would be great to hook up and have a chat - thanks!
