My 5 yr old was diagnosed with AA last Thursday, although we're still waiting for the results from the culture to come back. The Dr. said he was 95% sure that he has AA but wanted to make sure that there is no fungus. Looking at pictures of AA, I haven't seen any that looks like what my son has. I got his hair cut about three weeks ago, noticed a small dime size bald spot and today it's about the size of a silver dollar. There's no redness, pus or rings but looks like dandruff with some hair still in the follicles. I rubbed his head with a wash cloth and a significant amount of hairs were on the cloth. My questions to any of you with AA, did yours ever look like what I am describing? How much hair did you lose in a three week period? Have you found putting oil or cream on the scalp makes the flakes less, if so, what kind? Any info is welcome!! Thank you in advance for your answers and help!

Hi. My baby is 14months and started this at 91/2months. She started just like your sons. I too noticed a ton of her hair on everything. It slowly started to all fall out. She is now pretty much completely bald. she also has no eyebrows or eyelashes. It happened all within a 3 month period. Not much to do but hope! He may just have a few patches that will grow back soon. It may never get to his whole head. Could just be temporary.
Hi Lindsey, sorry to hear you are going through all of this. My daughter started losing hair at 13 mo old, and by the time we got a dx at 15 mo and started a steroid cream, she had maybe 10 spots. It happened quickly, but I never found the hair--my hair is all over, and I never seemed to find any of hers (I even ran tape in her crib)! She has round spots about the size of dimes to quarters, and larger spots that aren't round. Her scalp was fine, just smooth in the spots. She stopped losing hair and actually got lots of regrowth at 16 mo, but at 17 mo (now) she has several new spots. I've heard you can have some spots that are regrowing at the same time as getting new ones. She had also had some "cradle cap" per her derm, and the steroid cream was to treat that too. Maybe the hairs you see are the exclamation point hairs? I've noticed in Gracie's new spots, there are a few short hairs left. Its a hard dx to get, I am just getting to a point where I'm not freaking out every time I see a new spot. Let me know if you have any more questions! Angie
