I'm just curious if there are any other families out there with more than one child with alopecia. We have six children 3 with alopecia. We have 3 girls and 3 boys, two of our boys and one girl have alopecia. Also my oldest daugther and our one daughter with alopecia have Hashimoto's. We are particiapting in research with the alopecia foundation since they have found a genetic link.

Hello, I am not sure if my post posted but I am posting again : ) Hi, I have 6 children 3 girls 3 boys : ) My daughter is 10 and she was diagnosed with AA when she was 4 years old, my son is 6 and he was diagnosed with AA when he was 4, my youngest son is 4 years old and he was diagnosed with A/Universalis when he was 2 years old. We have had our ups and downs with Alopecia. My son's allergist thinks Dr's may be missing something with my youngest one and advises me to take him to University of California for futher testing but we really can't afford it right now but other than that they are fine. My youngest one has had the most issues with the hair loss he has severe allergies my poor little guy : ( He was once in the Hospital for a growth on his liver which ended up being an abcsess non cancerous and well when he was in the hospital they had him on some very strong meds and for some reason his head started growing all the peach fuzz and well when he was sent home and finished all his meds after a monthe we started seeing dark hair, we started to get excited but then all of a sudden it all fell out again : ( false hopes again. sorry for the venting I haven't vented in awhile : ) Hope to hear from you

Wow..that is strange that you have 3 boys and 3 girls too and that 2 of your boys and and one girl have AA. My oldest son is 16 and recently started to have some regrowth but he has AU for a couple years, my 11 yr old daughter had AA and now has AU for 2yrs. my 13 yr old boy also had AA and now is losing it all. It seems that mine lose it all when hormones start to kick in. My dauther also has Hashinoto's which is an auto immune thyroid disease, my 17 yrd old daughter also has it. I really believe there has to be some kind of enviromental, allergy or something. Our youngest is 2 and we decided to try delaying vaccinnes as one of our pediatrician's said that having so many at once could be a trigger. We are participating in research with the alopecia foundation and praying they find some kind of cure. How do your children cope? Mine deal with it pretty well, my 13 yr old son that has currently lost all his hair is struggling a bit right now. We do online school at home but were planning to move this summer and enroll in public school.

yeah, that was strange when I read your comment stating you had 3 girl and 3 boys : ) Well I have to say that my kids do very well with their condition they have very good attitudes about it. My daughter she is 10 years old and she will give a speech at the beginning of the school year to her class mates just stating that she is not any different from them all and has feeling just like them and would really appreciate it if they would not make fun of her or tease her and she explains her condition to her classmates and also states it is not contagious....This gets me all the time...but overall they do very great... Yeah, I think that if they were homeschooled it would be a bit easier for the kids to cope but public schools is a whole new world...Through out the school years that my daughter has been going to public schools there has been several kids that have teased her but she doesn't let that get in her way now on the other hand I get so upset but we can't control other kids behaviors. I wish you all the luck going to public schools... Starting out with a speech explaining their conditon to their whole class or school is a great way to break the ice... again Good Luck
Hi, I have a boy (18) and a girl (13) both with AA. My son started with very small hair loss at 13 and has had on and off AA ever since- never really really bad though. But my daughter just started (hormones for sure!) and hers is going much faster and worse. In the last month she has lost huge patches on her scalp and all over her body. I have Hashimoto's and both sides of family have allergies. Both kids have allergies. My son managed very well. We tried some treatments but that was worse than the AA so we quit. My daughter though is really struggling. Feeling very scared anxious about losing so much she can't hide it anymore. I feel so badly for her as she is already a tall slightly plump girl who has beautiful thick black hair to her bum- she felt it was her "one beauty". It is so hard. How do you encourage your kids?
For the most part my children were very young when they started getting alopecia so they kind of got used to it at a young age..but now that my oldest daughter is 10 years old about to go to middle school she has started to worry about her hair falling out again because there has been a pattern every year and a Half 90% of her hair falls out so that had her worried.but I just tell her don't worry about it to much let's just stay positive..but I think getting alopecia at an older age would be a Lil more difficult because they didn't have hair loss at an Early age. All you can do is be there for her I wish you all the luck!!
