Over the weekend my 8 yr old daughter confided in me about a number of instances at school last week in which she was bullied about her hair loss.
This included an older boy who repeatedly pulled her off headscarf one lunchtime. Every time he did it, he pulled some of the last remaining strands of her hair out with it, so it was quite painful physically for her, as well as emotionally difficult.
Then there was some name calling by a group of girls who also punched and pushed her. Plus some of her supposedly good friends said she looked weird and couldn't play with them.
I have dealt with the last one as I know their parents and they have all been spoken to about it.
But I am really shocked at the extent of what's going on. I will be speaking to the teacher this afternoon, but in the meantime, I wondered if anyone has any advice, how their kids have coped with any similar situations, and what you've done to help them. She's a quiet and sensitive girl who by nature isn't very good at standing up for herself.
Thanks everyone!

Me again! Sydney took a book about Alopecia to school that we got on Amazon and read it to the class to educate them on what Alopecia was and let them ask her questions. She hasn't had any problems with bullying (so far) Also we have been to a few sessions of counseling with is helping sydney with her confidence in handling different situations that might come up and how to deal with them. As far as the punching/pushing this should be addressed by the school and they should be punished accordingly since it was physical contact. It's one thing to name call and another to punch. It's not an easy journey and I'm frustrated with it just as much as Sydney is sometimes. We just have to help them believe that they are worth everything with or without hair and should be treated like that.

Thanks Sara. So hard sometimes :(
National Alopecia Areata Foundation has a video and handbooks that you can take to school for the other kids to watch and it is also an eye opener for the teachers on what to look for. You can register online or you can just call for the free video and handbook.
Any pushing, shoving or hitting is not acceptable and you should contact her teacher and put a stop to that.
