Does anyone know anything about Clobex and its side effects? That is what our pedi dermatologist prescribed, but some of the things I've read online are scary (HPA axis suppression). I'm new here and I know very little about the treatments for regrowth. Just wondering if anyone has used it on their child before. My 6 yr. old daughter was just diagnosed with AA this past Friday and I feel so completely lost and out of control!

Hi Melani, my daughter, Julia ,was diagnosed with AA when she was two yrs. old. She is now seven and is experiencing the worst hair loss "episode" since she was diagnosed. She has been on and off Clobex many times. It worked very well for her at first, but it is not working for her now. She is currently on other meds. Skin thinning was the only side effect that she ever experienced. I feel so helpless and sad. Now more than ever. We are now trying cool laser treatments on her as well. I got the OK from her dermatologist. I hope this works. I will let you know!
Pam,

I am so sorry to hear that you and your daughter are going through such a difficult time. Thanks for your take on Clobex. Genevieve's dermatologist says it is the only thing I can give her, but the more I read on this site, I realize that cannot be true. Did Julia start off with mild AA, or was it severe from the start? Genevieve is experiencing mild, patchy AA--but I just have this terrible feeling that it is going to get much worse (way to be positive--right?) I understand your helpless and sad feelings because it is such an unpredictable disorder. I like to be in control of things so this 'wait and see' time is about to do me in! I really hope that the laser treatments have positive results for your daughter. I will keep Julia and your family in my prayers!
Hi Melani:

In my experience I used clobex (only cream and shampoo) for more than a year and my daughter (6 years old) did not have any side effects. She had regrowth all over her head. but she lost most of her hair 6 months later so I stopped the treatment.

Greetings,

Estrealla
Estrella,

Thanks so much for letting me know about your experience with Clobex. Genevieve has mild, patchy AA and the dermatologist says it is definitely time to start her on that treatment. I just feel so conflicted about the whole thing! How is your daughter's current situation? I certainly hope that things are going in a positive direction for you guys. I will keep your family in my prayers!

Sincerely,

Melani
THE DOCTORS GAVE JOSE CLOBEX AS WELL AND I WOULD PUT IT ON HIM AND TO ME IT DIDNT WORK BUT JOSE'S HAIR LOSS WAS VERY RAPID. HE WAS DIAGNOSED IN 10/05 AND WAS COMPLETELY BALD BY 03/06. SO IT MAY HAVE BEEN MORE PROGRESSIVE FOR HIM THAN YOUR DAUGHTER. DONT WORRY ABOUT WHAT YOU READ. THEY HAVE TO TELL YOU ALL THE BAD STUFF THAT CAN OR MIGHT HAPPEN. TRY IT AND I HOPE IT WORKS. OH I THINK THE DOCTOR GAVE HIM THE MOUSSE. GOOD LUCK AND MAKE SURE YOU STAY POSITIVE AND KEEP TELLING HER THAT SHE IS BEAUTIFUL NO MATTER WHAT. DONT LET HER SEE YOU WORRIED OR SHE WILL WORRY TOO.
Thanks so much for the info. and positive words. I am trying to be as positive as possible, but inside I have a feeling that things are going to get much worse. It all feels like a dream really. Jose is such a handsome little boy with an amazing smile! You seem like such a strong family! He looks so happy, which shows what a great mother he must have! We are being strong for Genevieve as well, but she doesn't what could ultimately happen should things progress much further. We pray that they won't. Thanks for the support!

Melani
Hi Melani,

My 4 yr old daughter started taking Clobex 12/5/08 for 1 mo, then was taken off & was using a lesser concentrated topical steroid and put back Clobex 1/21/09 & is still currently using it. She hasn't had any side effects from it. I know b4 I used it on her, I read up on it too & the stuff online is pretty scary. We are actually doing a combination of Clobex, Minoxidil 5% & a 6 wk course of Prelone. We are seeing significant results, but we are preparing our daughter that it is possible to lose your locks again once treatment stops. We are hopeful, but just don't know what the future holds.
I would ask your pedi derm about using Minoxidil w/ the Clobex though. Our pedi derm said that the results are better when used together. I wish you & your daughter much success! I hope I was of some help...
BTW, your daughter is precious! I grew up in Dallas & lived in Houston for most of my 20's. Can't beat the Lonestar state! :)
