Hello, I am new to Alopecia world and my daughter will prob throw a fit when she knows I joined. My daughter just turned 13yrs old, she is in 7th grade and is a competitive cheerleader. Ashton has struggled with Alopecia since she was 4 yrs old but we have always been able to hide it, until now. This past summer she was on oral steroids but we discontinued because of the side effects and now her hair is falling out faster than ever before. Kids at school are terrible. She has gotten where she doesn't want to go to school. She has texted me everyday saying how much she hates the kids and just wants to come home. Because of the Alopecia I have always overcompinsated for her all the name brand clothes anything to limit what she can get picked on for..hoping...praying that if she is considered "cool" it would be much easier. But it hasn't helped a bit. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know asap. I feel like my baby girl's spirit is being broken.

I have a friend whose daughter went through the same thing. While the district couldn't stop the teasing they were able to set her up to be homeschooled. A substitute teacher from the district dropped off & picked up schoolwork as well as taught her 3 half days a week for about 5 months. It was a great boost for her spirit to be homebound for that time and not have to endure the constant taunts from other children. Good luck to you! I have a son in 6th grade and he's a shy, keep to himself, type of child and has experienced the taunts, just not due to alopecia.
Hello, myself, another new to the group "mother". Em endured teasing for the last 2 years of school, when her AA started. This year in grade 6, seems to be her best year yet...she does not give me trouble or complain about going to school everymorning...maybe the kids are all used to seeing her in her bandana's or maybe its because she is now in the oldest grade at the elementary school. My concern is definetely for next year when she starts grade 7, she will then become again in a school with two older grades...I as well have overcompinsated for her at times. Not necessarily with the clothes, but with letting her stay home if she has felt like it in the past...us mothers just want to make it as easy as we can on them...doesn't make it any easier when they have a big sister who looks like a model, with gorgeous long hair. Em was given a natural hair wig but has only ever worn it to play around the house...i think having this website to share with our children should help them not feel so alone...good luck to us all :)
ITS TIME FOR AWARENESS THEY ARE PROBABLY TEASING HER BECAUSE THEY ARE SCARED OF SOMEONE WHO IS DIFFERENT SO IF THERE IS ANY WAY TO DO AN AWARENESS ON ALOPECIA ITS TIME TO DO IT IF YOU ARE LOCAL I WILL HELP CHECK OUT MY POWERPOINT ON ALOPECIA AND SEE IF IT HELPS KEEP HER SPIRITS HIGH ENFORCE THAT SHE IS BEAUTIFUL ALWAYS AND TELL HER THAT THE KIDS ARE JEALOUS BECAUSE SHE IS PRETTIER THAN THEM
