My 8 year old was diagnosed with AA last week. The 3 patches of hair developed within 3 days. One of each side toward the back near her ears and one at the right temple. The Friday before when I french braided her hair, there weren't any bald spots. Monday night I noticed the totally bald patches. I totally freaked out and took her to the emergency room. They were clueless. The next day I called her Pediatricians office and they said they could schedule her in 5 days that it was not an emergency. I finally just set an appointment up with a dermatologist which I paid for out of pocket and got her started on the cortizone injections to try to arrest the hair loss. I think it has slowed down but it looks like it has spread toward the back. She also complains of an itchy scalp. Has anyone had this type of symptom and progression. I just want to have any idea of what to expect next. She has adjoining circular patches in three area of her head.

Brittany was first diagnosed last year when she was 7. I was doing her hair and suddenly noticed one perfectly round clean bald spot. A few weeks later she had 3 spots, and now today a year later she has lost about 40-50% of her hair and wears a wig soemtimes. When she was recieving treatment she too had an itchy scalp. We decided to stop the treatment considering after so long it did not help her any. Her eyebrows are now losing hair too.
I have heard of both an itchy scalp when losing hair and when regrowing so that is typical. I think I've seen you post elsewehere on this board so trust you've since received good information. I'm happy to chat anytime so feel free to reach out. We've had a few years experience at this point (although not with treatments) - it's been 4+ years since my daughter was diagnosed with aa.
that sounds like how mine started but I was a bit older (20) and I did start to notice that my scalp would get really itchy right before the hair would fall out there.
Hi there Lillian! Sorry to learn your daughter also suffers from A.A. My daughter's first experience with A.A. was at age 8. At the time, she lost 1/4 her scalp hair atop her head, then it all regrew within one year. She is now 12 years old and almost in remission from her second episode of A.A., of which spots stayed fairly small, as she choose to have treated with injections. The first time around, the dermatologist said she was too young to treat with injections, so she treated with a steriod cream and 5% Minoxidil. This time around, she has had injections every four weeks which has helped to manage her hair loss. My son is 10 and experiencing his first case of A.A., and he also treats with injections. His spots have gotten a bit worse atop his head, but I know they would be far larger without the injections. Both kids have gone over a year being able to naturally conceal their A.A. If you have other children, do know that it is extremely-extremely rare for siblings to have this disease - so don't go there with worry. I have a friend with A.A., whose scalp itches when she is regrowing hair. Doctors say that almost anyone who gets A.A. recovers within one year. I know it is sooooo hard, but try not to get too worried. There is every chance that your daughter is one of the "lucky ones" whose hair will regrow and she will never have A.A. again. I believe the injections are the best treatment out there. I believe the kids' dermatologist when she tells me there are no proven side effects to the injections treatment. Remeber, it could take a few months to notice hair regrowth, this is not a disease that will go away quickly - like treating a cut. Try hard to be patient and strong. Know in your mind that you are getting your daughter the proper medical treatment . Write anytime & take care!
