Should I start saving for wigs?
I have a daughter who will be 3 soon, and ever since she was born she has not had really any hair at all. When she was about maybe 4 or 5 months old she was bald as a q-ball. When she was about a year old, she grew a small little patch of hair on the back of her head. I took her to a dermatologist and she told me she had alopecia areata. Now it's grown in a little more around the sides of her head and she has one longer curl in back. Does anyone know if it will all grow in eventually? Or will it stay this way? I don't know if I should save up for wigs for when she starts school so she won't feel self-conscious. Has anyone else experienced this or has a toddler with alopecia to this degree?

You don't have to save money for wigs. The hair club for kids offers free wigs (aka bio-matrix) for children. I refer to alopecia as a roller coaster ride. There are many ups and downs to the disease. One day your child will have hair (you're climbing the roller coaster) then a while later the child starts to lose hair (going down) then you start treatment and hair grows (yay going up the roller coaster) then it starts to fall out again (going down the roller coaster). It is a very emotional disease for everyone. It is UNPREDICTABLE. It is unfortunate. My daughter has about 5 % hair on her head and has no arm, leg, or nose hair. Anthralin has worked best for my daughter. We are now doing accupressure and herbal therapy. Anthralin doesn't have any bad side effects, the only side effect is irritating of the skin on the area that it has been applied to. We did do Rogaine and some kind of topical steroid that worked but made her vomit and have diarrhea. So of course we stopped that treatment. Best of luclk to you and your family. This is tough to handle and therapy has helped me and my daughter.
