Alopecian in NYC

  • Monalixsa

I feel as if I am the only Alopecian in NYC. I feel alone out here. I need to reach out to someone. Although I have had alopecia for the last 10 yrs, I just lost 90% of my hair in the last two months. It has been a hard time for me. I had to shave my remaining hair off, I am wearing scarf, I don't feel comfortable with wigs. I need to know how to find the confidence to come out of hiding? How do I transition from feeling unattractive to feeling beautiful as I am? Please help me overcome this anguish I feel.
  • Alex

your absolutely not alone here!!....well maybe on this website but not in the city lol
  • Monalixsa

    lol. It is a start

    Hi Alopecians in NYC,

Hey I am glad so many of u responded to the post. I am feeling much better now that I have the support I found in this site. I am still coping with the change in life style. Summer in NYC is extremely hot. Wearing a scarf or wig doesn't make it any easier. I am still not completely comfortable walking around bald. How do you respond to others ignorance?
  • elizabeth

I guess the best way to deal with ignorance is with education.
Wigs in the summer, in NYC heat, is torcherous. I wear a wig to work and to my business meetings, but that is it. The bald look is not for me just yet. Not ready. However, on my days off I wear a solid black bandana with a baseball cap. Very sporty, casual and comfortable.

  • Beth

Hi fellow New Yorkers! I am hoping to get some recommendation for places to visit that sell hairpieces for complete baldness and spotting as well as places that can actually style them. I have a friend I met from a NAAF conference coming in this weekend for a hair appointment in Brooklyn. I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to research some other places in the City since she is flying in from the Midwest. Look forward to hearing from you.
    Thanks in advance!

Hi Everyone. I'm from Long Island, NY and I am happy to know that I'm not alone :-)
  • Heather Bloom

Hi, I am new to this site. I am eager to meet up with other alopecians.
  • Jennifer

Hi all! I'm looking for recommendations for someone who can cut/style a wig for me. I always order my wigs online just to save money and generally just cut them myself, but I'm at the point where I'd like to have it done professionally. If anyone has a recommendation, preferably in Manhattan but it's not necessary, I'd greatly appreciate it!
  • Heather Bloom

Hey, is the support group still meeting Tues. the 22nd? Is it a definite thing?
  • catherine

http://www.lilibethbeautifulbrows.com/home.html I have no eyebrows and just had them put on with special eyebrow powder at their UWS NYC location. I am VERY happy with the results.
