About Me:
I am 33, a wife and mother to two beautiful boys, ages 4 and 6.

I've never had a hairloss problem until discontinuing birth control last year. Ever since, my hair comes out excessively every day. Because all of my labs are normal, the dermatologist feels I have telogen effluvium. However, she also says I have an androgen sensitivity due to the oily skin, cystic acne and hairloss. As a result, I'm back on hormones and anti-androgens but haven't seen any improvement. The longer this goes on and the thinner I get, I can't help but wonder if I have androgenic alopecia. What's a girl to do? I say be prepared for what may come my way. That's when I found this site. And I must say, you ladies give me the encouragement to endure whatever the future holds!!
Do you have alopecia?
Other type of alopecia
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes

    Hi Laurie,

    It's nice hearing from you.

    Hi and welcome!!

I too have the cystic acne, oily skin, and oily hair. I never had acne as a teenager but started getting it about 2 years ago. It's not really bad but when I get one it's like a big knot.

Welcome to a network of those who truly accept you for you. So glad you found us. Where are you from? I am from the Northwest. Lovely part of the country, but it has been too cold this year for me (60 - 70 degrees in the middle of July). Yuck. To say the least no tan for me. ~Danna

Hi Laurie! Thanks for sending me a message. I just moved to Houston from Austin in February. Still trying to find my way around Houston and learning about all the neat places in Houston. My husband laughs at me because when ever we drive to places I am not familiar with around Houston I always get confused =) I think we have been in Pearland before. Your boys are adorable!!! I hope you had a great week!!

    Hi Laura,
You don't mind me asking but what did the doctor prescribe for you for your androgen sensitivity and hormone inbalance? I suspect that is what is why I am losing my hair.
    Have a great weekend!!!

Hi Laurie! My husband and I live in the Galleria area right now, but are moving to the Heights area next month. I worked for a law firm in Austin and when I moved to Houston I was able to keep on working for them so I work from home now part time. When your boys go back to school and you have some free time let me know. Maybe we can get together for coffee.

Hi Laurie - so sorry for the delay in my response! Thanks for reaching out and telling me your story. What you decide to do is an extremely personal choice, and it all comes down to what is going to make you feel most comfortable. I meet some women who decide to wear hair pieces before their hair loss becomes significant so that it will be less of a transition in the future, and I meet others, like yourself, who really want to wait and see what happens with their hair first before making any moves. Unfortunately, the medical side of all of this really has no rhyme or reason, so its hard to predict what may happen. If you want to make a change that will help you look better, and thus feel better – that is something you have to decide. Worrying about your hair can be very consuming!!! I do hope you find a solution and keep your chin up. You can always call me at my salon, 1-800-217-9052....

Thanks for the support Laurie...I'm not in Houston yet and don't have any specific recommendations for you unfortunately, but i'm working on expanding even more, so maybe i'll be there soon!

Just wondering how you were. Hope all is well. I was wondering if you found a hairpiece? I am still looking too.

Hi Laurie! I have not been wig shopping in Houston. My first wig I got from San Antonio and I ordered my second wig online. I have heard that Tom Magliaro's Hair Additions is a great place in Houston. I hope you are doing well!

    Hello Laurie
  • Dawn

Good to hear from you. Yea, my hair started shedding again and I worry I might be almost bald in a couple of months because of all the hair!!! My acne has gotten worse too. I have suspected that I may have PCOS because I have alot of the symptoms. The doctor put me on birth control and said it should help with these symptoms. He never mentioned anti-androgens but I think a lot of doctors are afraid to put me on anything because of my heart. I have just been feeling down in the dumps again. I have been not getting out like I should because I am so self conscious about my appearance getting worse. I even feel like alot of people treat me differently now or distance themselves like I have a disease; It's so lonely. I feel I get alot of negatives looks from people now or feel I am treated with disrespect, that I don't like going places anymore because of it. I wish it would get better. I think maybe if I could find a hair piece it may make me feel more like myself again and not feel so self conscious. I wish I could say that I have been doing better but I am a little down lately.
Glad to hear you are doing well. Where did you find your topper?
    Take care

I am sorry that you are feeling sad. I hope things get better. I think we alopecians have our moments though. The support here has been a blessing and helps me get through those days.
I am looking into getting an integration. It's a hairpiece that you pull your existing hair through. I checked with the Hair Club and they said they could do it; The only thing is they are kind of expensive. So, I am still thinking about it. What about you? Did you get the topper you were looking at?
Take care and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!!
