About Me:
6 years ago since I first lost my hair and its now april 2014. I had a full head after 3yrs and then its been in and out like mad, its just now growing and falling out which is so frustrating and confusing. I have lost a lot this time and was also diagnosed with a disease called endometriosis which I believe is what could have made my hair loss happen or worse. I still don't know how to cope with alopecia and just now wearing a hair piece while waiting on a wig for safety in case I lose more hair. Took a step back from this group as I was feeling positive with my hair but feel like im back to square one. Needing some support around me to help me accept whats going on.
Do you have alopecia?
Alopecia areata
Are you age 18 or older?
Yes - I am 18 or older

    Hello Lynne!

    How's your day going?

That's to bad you do not like your doctor! That's miserable!! I feel very fortunate to have a doc I like so much... If you took your doctor a list of blood work you wanted to have done- think they would? You mentioned a Lupus test- that is a good idea- as AA is often seen in Lupus patients. Perhaps when they run that test they can add the following:

This is what my doc recommended:

    Comp. Metabolic Panel
    Lipid panel
Thyroid function test (include TSH, T3, T4)
    Vitamin D 25-Hydroxy, D2 & D3
    CBC
    RA factor (rheumatoid arthritis)
Sed rate (sedimentation rate detects signs of inflammation)
    ANA (antinuclear antibody= Lupus)
    CRP (c-reactive protein)
    Serum iron and ferritin
Hormone panel (including free testosterone, estradiol, luteinizing hormone and FSH)

Have you been using steroids for AA? If so may want to add a urine test for Adrenal function.

Back to you not being able to be in the sun and the Vit. D connection- Vitamin D 3 (Cholecalciferol) is produced in the skin from a photo-reaction on exposure to ultraviolet B light from the SUN!!! We do also get some (small amounts) of Vitamin D 2 (erogcalciferol) from food (plant sources). There has been a great deal of research with the lack of Vitamin D and autoimmune disease. If you should want to take a supplement- Vitamin D 3 is the one you want. - the RDA suggests 1,000 IU a day. My doc recommends 3,000 UI.

    talk to you soon,
    Heather

    Hey!

No problem for the info- I hope it can help!!

How are you? Anything planned for the weekend?
  • Donna Marie Golubovas

Hi Lynne, thank you for such a warm welcome to the site.
  • Rachael Louise Salmond

    Hi Lynne,
My name is Rachael from Australia - and Ive just read all your blogs.
( I seem to look for australian and scottish on this site due to I'm australian and Im getting married in 8 weeks to a guy from scotland)
About 2.5 years ago my hair fell out, my long blonde hair gone with in 2 months - just f@#king horrid - the last few strands were shaved off by my girlfriend (who's scottish) with her fanny clippers - i kid you not!!!
Although losing my hair has been dreadful - my girlfriend ( which are mostly scottish) and I have exploited my hair loss - Cafe's in Australia seem to want to give free cake to us, You are moved to the front row at concerts and given back stage passes, and shop assistants take my shopping to my car - I take all these with a thank you and smile, but it doesn't make up for the shit the general public think they can say to you - and what the fuck are people thinking when they come up and touch my head (i may look like a little budha due to the amount of free cake i get - but I'm not).
For the first 18months I tryed all sorts of things - Doctors of all kinds - being sent from one to another, all types of pills - mineral, vitamin, chinese herbs, idian herbs (even smoked some herbs), Ive stuck needles and magnets all over my body - in places you would not believe! I've had my eye, nail and even my poo looked at (yes ive walked in to a full Dr waiting room with a very old, deaf receptionist behind the counter with a jar of my poo) It's very funny when i tell the story. Ive even painted a lotion onto my head which made my head red, itchy and blistered ( it looked like I had herpies on my head - not the best look - and people didn't want to touch it so much) And Vodka - lots and lots of vodka followed by sparkling wine !!!!!!!!!!!!!! Yes i did all of this to grow my hair back (the vodak and wine was not really required but in those first few weeks dulled the pain)- And Ive lost friend, My AA has weeded out the good from the bad, Its made me laugh at myself and Ive made other laugh with me over it.
I'm not saying I haven't cryed - I have. But the laughter has out weight the crying. I now have a small but close group of friends, that would stand up for me at any time, if I could not do it for my self. (which is not really the case) Im like a terrier (5foot nothing and full of yap)
8 months ago I went to see a Physican in Immunology and Allergys - he has put me on medication (like what cancer patients take) and bugger me my hair is growing back - its darker and thicker than before (but who cares) it's growing in slowly - i'm still bald on the sides and back, but have thich hair on the top and fine baby like hair on the bald patches which are thickening up.
it seems to be working. Like I said I am getting married in 8 weeks so I have ordered a Freedom wig (THE WIG COST MORE THAN THE DRESS)
Ive ordered the wig because people do look when your out in public, I am going to be in scotland in 6.5 weeks - In Hawick and Skye (my girlfriend with the fanny clippers) is getting married in skye, Then she's comming with us to Vegas to give me away. And I want to look the best I can, without people looking at me like I'm dying, I also want to look good for her , my partner and for myself as well. But I really believe I am MORE THAN MY HAIR. I have great friends, a wonderful man, a job ( i work with all men who a lazy fuckers - But who would stick up for me in any pub we go to when someone opens their mouth about my lack of hair) And I am happy - more so than 2.5 years ago.
Stick in there - it gets better - Love Rach xoxo
  • Rachael Louise Salmond

Hiya lynne, It was so nice to hear back from you - Glad I could make you giggle - I tell you, my mother shakes her head ( she still wears a big bee hive bun) and rolls her eyes an says " were did I go wrong I didn't raise you to be like that" When she see or hears what Ive been up too.

About freedom wigs - there in scotland - I have the australian web site look it up on that ( www.freedomwigs.com.au ) there in glasgow if I can remember. I do know there in scotland because i thought I may have to have it sent to scotland and pick it up there if it was going to run late - best you look it up tonight!!! - I will be emailing you tomorrow to make sure you do!!!!

I just got the special fitting cap for my freedom wig yesterday after i emailed you - put it on and forgot I had it on my head - it fitted so well un f@#king believeable. I have 3 other wigs i bought from wig shops - the blonde pammy anderson (the bedroom wig - the partner picked this one) the short posh spice wig ( that i got from "wigs on wheels" people (she a women that has a mini bus full of wigs and goes around to your house) then the very first one which was just horrible - it didn't fit right, it moves when i laughed, and I sweat in it like a rapist ( sorry for that - thats a saying my partner uses) I was out with my girlfriend (fanny clippers) on the champers (pink bubbles was very in 2 year ago) and i begged her that if i got that drunk that she would have to make sure i didn't vomit in my hair - so where at the party at some one home and theres only one toilet - there would have been 50-60 people there - and the girl friend (fanny clippers) tells me that the wig is moving all over my head - i either have fringe that starts at the crown of my head or otherwise starting at my eyebrows. i go into the bathroom and throw the wig on the floor - remember i have had a few chapers by now , do my business because i have had a few chapers by now , wipe the sweat from my head, pick the wig up off the floor and f@#k me its wet - wet with peoples piss!! can you believe that - i had to walk out there with pissie wet wig hair!!!! - not a good look!!! thank god for cheap purfume and ciggie smoke!! otherwise I wouldn't be know as that little bald girl, I'd be know as pissie hair girl!!
(HOPE THIS MAKES YOU GIGGLE - WE ALWAY COME BACK TO THIS STORY)
I'm sure, if you really want to you could come over to Australia, I never thought I would go to the UK and soon it will be my 2nd time.
I live in the eastern suburbs of sydney - near the beach and its wonderfull althought its winter here now and it only 16 to 19 degrees ungodly weather - I hate the cold, - mind you i was in scotland for a christmas and that was a shock for the system ( christmas to me is sun, beach, and heat) It is great here and wouldn't want to live any where else,
What do you do for work???
I estimate printing - I use to estimate printing of porn magazines - which was great I never bought any friend that were boys presents I just stole the mags and wrappped them up - and My present of mags was the most wanted as well.
Theres no women in this game only men so i have developed a thick skin to the bull shit guys say - M
  • Sara

Thank you very much :) I don't mind. It started as Areata about one and a half year ago, right before christmas. How long time have you had it?

  • christina

Hey there, Im feeling much better than I did when I first joined thanks. Im really glad you had a nice week :) Have you been up to anything nice? Im a student and its holidays so Im just being boring lol , and theres no jobs around, so I cant get a summer job. xx
  • Rachael Louise Salmond

Hiya Lynne, Am in a bad way today - Had mine and (Fanny Clippers) hen party and am still suffering - I to am PMS truely you can only get me one week a month when I am in a "normal" frame of mind I'm either pre, prost or during a period - My partner (big stu) calls me the army reserve!!!!! I LOVE sing star, stu wont buy it for me, there is a channel here thats a Karoke channel - its great and Its always on, We had curryokey for the hens party.
great indian food, Karoke, Drag queen and my fav an elvis !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! then off to the clubs - love clubs that let you table dance!!! just wonderful - Had hug big 6 inch heel boots , long blonde wig, - I looked like a drag queen my self!!!! - am now suffering due to the shots, the shoes and lack of sleep, also can not speak have lost my horrid singing voice (Im tone deaf).
Hope you have rang that shop!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Im on to you otherwise!!!!!!!!!!
Yes you must save and come over, and you could always stay with me!
Wow you sound like you have a great job!!! I love cloths, shoes, handbags - although I only ever wear jeans and overalls due to work, It funny when I wear anything else, People ask me If I'm going out or have a function to go to, they are so use to me in "jeans and overalls" also I think because I lost my hair I didn't want to get seen so dressing up became less important , At the beginning it was dreadful and I would make excuses not to go out - not the case any more, I wear the conventional wig I would say 2% of the time and the rest i wear it how it is - With the hair I have now I look like I'm in the army reserve. - Am at work so I better get going - Have a great week, ring that bloody shop - then let me know how it goes and keep in touch - Rach
  • SoCalMommy

Yes, I think it has been easier, I took about one year and then it got easier.. I have had some hair regrowth but not much, some straws on my head..
I'm just well, I'm not on the computer so often :p I'm going to work this whole weekend. Last weekend it was "Midsommar" a Swedish summer tradition so I was with my family in our summer house. What's your plans for the weekend? And where do you live?
Okay, that must be hard.. Have you still Areata or have you got Universalis?
Yes, thats true. I think it helps a bit to think that it's good that it doesn't affect our bodies fysically.. You know, it could always have been worse.. But I understand if you don't can think so yet, I couldn't in the beginning. Have you spoken to a psychologist?
What do you think is the hardest part of it?

THE DRUG IS A CHEMO DRUG - AND THIS IS THE 3RD TYPE THAT IM ON.
THE FIRST MADE ME SO SO SO SICK - THE VOMITTING EVERDAY FOR 3 HOURS JUST DREADFULL . (FANNY CLIPPER FRIEND) HAD TO TAKE ME TO THE DR ONE TIME IT WAS THAT BAD, THE 2ND DRUG GAVE ME NO IMMUNE SYSTEM AND I HAD TO BE IN ISSOLATION FOR A WEEK AND THIS 3RD DRUG NO PROBLEMS (ALTHOUGH I AM NOT SUPPOSE TO DRINK ON IT) AND I HAVE BLOOD TEST EVER WEEK ( THE HUMAN PIN CUSHION) I HAVE HAD 16 WEEKS OF THE DRUG HAIR DIDN'T FALL OUT ( SO FINGERS CROSSED) THE PROFESSOR I GO TO IS THE BEST IN THIS COUNTRY (WELL THATS WHAT EVER DR I SEE SAY) AND HE IS ALSO LOOKING AFTER ME DUE TO I HAVE 2 AUTO IMMUNE PROBLEMS THE FIRST IS A BLOOD CLOTTING ONE AND THE 2ND IS CALL SJORGENS - WHICH CAN CAUSE HAIR LOSS IN BAD CASES - ITS NOT USUALLY FOUND IN WOMEN MAY AGE - UP UNTILL THEY DID ALL THE TEST DR SAID I JUST HAS ALOPECIA. THE ONLY THING THAT I CAN SAY ABOUT THE DRUG I AM ON NOW IS THAT I DONT REAL WANT TO EAT - SO I HAVE LOST ABOUT 2 STONE - WHICH I NEEDED TO LOSE. THERE ARE A FEW THINGS THAT I HAVE TO WATCH OUT LIKE NOT GETTING PREGNANT , WHICH IS NOT ON MY TO DO LIST ANYWAY (I CAN NOT LOOK AFTER MY SELF) MY MUMS A NURSE AND SHE IS ALWAYS ON MY CASE ABOUT PROTECTION/SEX WITH ME - THIS IS A SUBJECT THAT SHE BRINGS UP ANYWEAR ANY TIME NO MATTER WHO IS ABOUT - NOW YOU CAN TELL I AM NOT A PRUDE AND I HAVE NO TROUBLE TALKING ABOUT ANY SUBJECT BUT DOES MY MUM (WITH HER 60'S BEE HIVE) NEED TO BRING IT UP WITH THE WAITRESS SURVING MY LUNCH - YES THE WAITRESS WANTED TO KNOW IF I WAS SICK AND I EXPLAINED IT TO HER THAT NO I'M NOT DYING AND THEN MY MOTHER (60'S BEE HIVE) ADDS "YES BUTS SHE'S ON A CHEMO DRUG - AND YOU KNOW SHE CAN NOT GET PREGGERS ON THOSE DRUGS" - MY NEW STRATAGIE WITH THIS IS TO TALK ABOUT THE RYTHEM METHOD WITH HER OR ORAL SEX! - MOTHER (60'S BEE HIVE) THEN GETS OFFENDED THAT IVE SAID THIS TO HER IN A PUBLIC PLACE AND THAT I REALLY SHOULD TALK ABOUT IT IN DOORS - MOTHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HAVE A GREAT WEEK - GOOD LUCK AND STAY IN TOUCH -ILL BE IN EDINBURGH IN 6 WEEKS THEN OFF TO VEGAS!!! IM GETTING EXCITED- LOVE RACH
  • Rachael Louise Salmond

    HIYA,
QUESTION - WHEN YOU SAY THE HOSPITAL IS GETTING YOU A WIG - DOES THAT MEAN YOU DON'T HAVE TO PAY FOR THEM????
AND IF YOU WANT REAL HAIR WHO PAYS?????
HERE IN AUSTRALIA WE HAVE TO PAY FOR ALL THE WIGS - IT ISN'T CONSIDERD A MEDICAL CONDITION (UNLESS YOU HAVE CANCER) THERE FOR YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR YOUR OWN WIGS??
HAVE JUST WRITTEN A LETTER TODAY TO THE PRIME MINISTER OF AUSTRALIA (AM SURE TO GET A REPLY) AND ASKED HIM TO TO CONSIDER LIFTING THE TAX ON WIGS - BECAUSE WIGS FOR ALOPECIA SUFFERES SHOULD BE CONSIDERED A PROSTHESIS - (60'S BEE HIVE - MOTHER) WANTS TO READ IT FIRST AS SHE IS CONVINCED THAT I WILL PUT SWEAR WORDS INTO THE LETTER/OR SAY HOW I DIDN'T VOTE FOR HIM AT THE LAST ELECTION! - SHE'S RIGHT I DIDNT VOTE FOR HIM - HES A POPULIST AND BOWS DOWN TO THE MAYORITY AND SEEING ONLY APPROX 4% OF THE POPULATION IN AUSTRALIA HAVE ANY FORM OF ALOPECIA HE'LL DO BUGGER ALL TO HELP!!! (ANYWAY ENOUGH ABOUT MY POLITICAL VIEWS) - I FOUND A GREAT QUOTE BY MARTIN LUTHER WHO SAID "HAIR IS THE RICHEST ORNAMENT OF A WOMEN" - SO I SHOVED THAT INTO MY LETTER AS WELL.
AM STILL FEELING SHIT - DUE TO MY PMT - ITS LIKE I ATE A BOWL OF BITCHY FOR BREAKFAST AND SHAT IT OUT ON EVERONE!!! (NOT A VERY ATTRACTIVE VISUAL THERE ) BEING UNSTABLE AND BITCH IS ALL A PART OF MY MYSTIQUE - THAT IS WHAT I TOLD THE BOSS THIS MORNING. - JUST FEELING SHIT!!
WOULD LOVE TO CATCH UP WITH YOU WHEN IM OVER THERE! PROMISE I WILL BE SWEET AND NICE - AND NOT BE IN A SHITTY PISSY MOOD LIKE I AM NOW.
NOW IS THAT YOU BABY IN THE PICS??? AND ARE YOU GETTING MARRIED SOON AS WELL???
THE PIC OF ME IS THE BEST OF A BAD LOT - AT (FANNY CLIPPERS) FANCY DRESS BIRTHDAY - KEEP IN TOUCH - LOVE RACH

Hello Lynne, it is so nice to meet you. I am so glad to have found this site, I do not feel so alone anymore, that am I the only one this is happening to feeling is disappearing. I was feeling pretty lonely there, my dermatologist admitted I am her only totally bald alopecia areata universalis patient, she see allot of areata's but I am her only baldy, so honored. I am really gaining confidence from reading so many stories & blogs, that I am getting ready to take a big step for me & have my hubby take my picture ah natural bald as a bean head & post it. Take care & again thanks for the welcome & most of all the friendship.

  • Pamela Rosse

Hi Lynn, sorry I forgot to answer your question, I was so touched with everyones comments, to answer your question, in January 2009 I went from Alopecia Areata, of which I battled for a 1 1/2, to Alopecia Areata Totalis, then in March or April I went to Universalis, when my system as they say took no prisoners. The hardest thing for me was the loss of my eyebrows & eye lashes, it was the straw that broke my back, I cried & was soo angry. I did a self referral to a counselor. So glad I did, it has helped, the most help I got was after reading Leslie Ann Butlers book, "If your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" really helped me allot, it is what lead me to this blessing of a site. I found I was not alone. I too get pived when friends or family say they too wish they had no hair, no bad hair days, I look at them & say, what I would not give to have a bad hair day, I'll take your bad hair day, I tell them don't ask for this, if you get you wish, you will be asking for your hair back. I know how awful I felt when the last of my hair was gone & it was bald, I remember going to my hair dresser & asking her to shave the rest off, we both cried. She keeps tabs on me, I miss having my hair done, I hate the treatments, some have been bloody painful, others causing scabs & icky stuff, painful injections. I'm doing the best I can, I have pretty much stopped the treatments, unless it's a cure I think I'm through. There's a time when we all go through the enough is enough stage. Acceptance is very hard, in time it comes, for each of us the time frame is different, sometimes I feel like the kitty in the hang in there poster. Hang in there I do. Take care my new friend, hang in there, this is not easy. I find myself using a silly phrase we used a long time ago, "Be Brave Little Buck-a-roo" I pass it to you, it's ok to laugh, but everyone here has been a brave lil buck-a-roo. From one buck-a-roo to another, be brave & hang in there. Life is special, so very special, I had a cancer scare in November, I'm here, that I will take, I may not like being bald but Lord I'm here, I'm alive. Take care Lynn,
  • Sharan

  • Pamela Rosse

Hey Lynn, I'm hanging in there, I take each day as it comes, I have good days & I have bad. Since I found this site, I have more good days. It is such a blessing to talk with someone who has been there & done that. Good luck at the Dermatologist tom. Hope all goes well. What is so great about this site is you don't feel so alone. I like you have no one around here with AA, I am the only baldy at my clinic, hard to find support group when it's just you.
Thank goodness we have Alopecia World. Do you have a far drive to your doctor? Where about in Scotland are you? Around the Highland area? Balmoral where the Royals hang. Is this not about the time when they come to Balmoral or is that August? Have you ever seen Her Majesty or the Prince's? LOL, I sure pelted allot of questions out there for you did I not.
I just got carried away. Scotland is a place I have always wanted to visit, all the pictures I have seen its beautiful. I hope to get there someday.
You take care my friend, hang in there, as you said, it will take time, acceptance takes time, it is normal to feel what you do. It is ok to get angry. It is ok to grieve for the loss of your hair, it is a loss. Hang in there.
Let us know how it goes at the Dermatologist.
    Talk to you Later.

Hi Lynn, Sorry I did not get back to you until now, I have been on a wee holiday to the beach with my husband. We had a great time. I am new to alopecia, but, yes, sadly they do scalp biopsy's. I', going into more detail on it with my Dermatologist on the next visit because I have lots of questions. The total who, what, when, where, how & why of it as they say. I will keep you informed. Take Care

Hi Lynn, Happy Bald Day. We had a wonderful time, thanks. Wigs they do take some getting used to don't they, you will give it time.
Went to dinner for my B-Day yesterday, the big days today. Having some friends over for BBQ today. I am getting ready to do corn on the cob, get the husk off. London Broil, Baked Potato, corn on cob, ceasar salad & Lemon cake & fresh raspberry's for desert. A bottle or two of a Cabernet wine. Not a bad B-Day dinner I think. Wish all my friends from AW could be here to help celebrate.
You take care, talk to you soon.
