I'm trying to live happily with alopecia...I do wear wigs but my goal is to be able to go without and not worry about what others will think or say; however, I have other goals to reach before I can get to that point. I first developed AA in 1989 at 21 years of age and dealt with it on and off until 1992 when it was so bad I had to resort to wigs. After many torturous steroid injections my hair grew back enough to where I was able to cover any spots I might've still had and lose the wigs all together. Fast forward to 1998 when it started all over again. I've been in wigs ever since with no hope of ever having my hair back. My husband and I ride a motorcycle and it's my dream one day to not care what anyone says about a bald head underneath the helmet.
I've been married to my husband since 2002 and he's never minded the fact that I was blessed with so much scalp (ha!), he's been really great actually, always encouraging me to go bald and be proud.
I have lived in Nashville since 1989 but was born and raised in Maryville, TN at the foothills of the Smokey Mountains (aka) God's Country!

Hi Angie.
Thanks for your kind words.
The great thing with a tatoo is that it´s easier to walk around bald public because then the attention is on the tatoo and not on you. That´s the reason I made it in the beginning. Hope you will find courage to go bald soon.
Take care Åsa
Angie, I just found your page. I too am from Tennessee. I'm from West Tennessee but I am seeing a dermatologist in Nashville. I will be coming to Nashville Friday and was wondering if you could recommend any good wig salons. I have had the hardest time finding a good wig around home. We just don't have that many salons and I love the ones you are wearing.
Angie, thank you so much for answering my questions so fast. I feel so much better now knowing where to go. I had printed off a list of salons but I felt like I was on a wild goose chase. I am excited about finding something that I may like. I have purchased 7-8 wigs that are just sitting in my closet that I want even put on because they are so bad. I finally found one that is decent but not really what I want. Maybe Friday will turn out to be all that I am hoping for. Thanks again.
Hi Angie, thanks for asking. My appt. went great. Dr. Horwitz said that he thought that he saw some regrowth so he continued with the injections. I have 3 more to go now. I go back on December 19th. I really like him. I feel confident with him. I'm trying not to get my hopes up to high but whatever happens happens. At least for now I'm doing something. I found a wig at the shop that you recommended in Franklin. I wasn't real sure about it at first and didn't wear it until about 2 weeks ago but now everyone says that it looks great and I think that when I go back on the 19th of Dec. I am going to get another one just like it. They were so nice. I felt so comfortable there. Thanks for telling me about them.
Hi Angie.
I've just been diagnoised with Alopecia Areata and am in the Nashville area. I was wondering if you could reccomend any wig stores - your wigs look so lovely. My mom is coming up for Thanksgiving and we wanted to go and try some on.
Thanks, Val
Angie - Thanks again for the suggestion on Chic Wig. I saw some people today at church that were unaware of the AA and they thought I had just gotten a new hairstyle!
Thanks so much, Val (c:
