About Me:
I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.

Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon

"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..

"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy

I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.

I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."

Hello Leslie, thank you for the welcome in. My daughter lives in another state then myself but on her behalf would like to offer the same sentiment. She doesn't know I am on this site. I think it would help for her to know she's not alone. Although my hair is fine and thin, her's seems to be extremely thinning on top with a great amount of scalp showing. Hopefully I can ease her into reading some of the stories on here. I'm sure they would be of great comfort to her. BTW, loved your pictures and I'm definitely going to pick up your book.

  • Angie

Hi Leslie, thank you for your welcome. I've had AU for almost 3 years now and I'm still struggling with it all. Eyebrow and eyelashes are the worst..I just saw you had a book out? I'll definitely look into that...

Thank you for the warm welcome. My 6 year old daughter who has AA is a dancer. She loves the name of your book. Happy holidays. Dena

  • Sandra

Hi LeslieAnn, thank you for asking and for your welcoming. My AA started in July and has been accelerating during the last three or four weeks. I didn't expect it to be so hard! Sometimes I'm overwhelmed with shock and panic, and a feeling of being completely alone - this is all new to me and no-one I know has gone through the same thing. I'm really glad that I have an inspiring work, lovely colleagues, and a loving family. Without all that I'm afraid I'd lost my mind... Ironically, my self esteem has always been strongly connected with my looks. Along with all these negative feelings, the rapid hair loss sometimes gives me a feeling of relief, as if life wanted to teach me something new:) Anyway, I look forward to reading others' stories here. Together we're not alone! And I'm getting a copy of your book. Yours sincerely, Sandra

I was looking for books about alopecia last week and found yours. Can't wait to read it!

  • Josie

    hi LeslieAnn,

My son and I are doing well. hope you are too. Congratulations on your new book. Its great to raise awareness out there. alot of people don't know much about Alopacia. My son is too young to understand. he is getting treatment for it and being seen every couple of months. they have put him on a waiting for DCP treatment but i am hesitant from what i read the symptoms can be. i don't want him to go through any pain and it sounds like this kind of treatment can be painful. I guess we will wait and see when the time comes.

Hi LeslieAnn... Thank you so much for reaching out to me ! I love your photos. Your hair is absolutely beautiful. If that is a wig, I would never know it. I've never been on a blog before. I am trying to stay positive and be proactive with my hair loss but I have my rough moments. I will be 50 in June. I've had diffuse thinning with dryness for at least 5yrs. It is more so on the top and sides. Hard because I've always worn pretty full bangs. In a nutshell, I used to get hairs tied in. This got quite expensive and wasn't doing the trick anymore. A few years ago, I discovered human hair clip on bangs with fringe on the side. I preferred the ones that i ordered through my hair stylist. I try to style my hair so that it is not noticeable. This is becoming harder as my hair continues to thin. I am starting to consider alternatives and eventually can see myself getting a full wig. I think I've gone as far as i can with my current hair stylist. I'm confused and a little scared as i know nothing about wigs and want it to look natural. Honestly, my hair situation is quite upsetting to me but i try not to dwell on it. And it takes a while to style in the morning and still not to satisfied with it. Sorry this is kind of long. I don't want to just order a wig. I would like more guidance from someone on how to go about it. I live in NJ. I am so glad I found this site. Gives me hope and seeing your photos gives me even more hope. Thanks again. I think I can learn a lot from this site if I go the the right places. Maryellen

As soon as I get the book and read through it, I'll let you know my thoughts on it. I'm sure I'll find your book very helpful and inspirational. I do not have any HH wigs as of yet. So far, I really like the feel and look of the Rene of Paris, Noriko and Amore wigs and they seem to fit my lifestyle just fine. Like you said, the HH wigs do require more upkeep and work than the synthetics. Plus they don't come in as wide of a variety of colors as the synthetics do so you have to take them to a hairstylist for coloring, which means more money. Probably beyond what my budget will allow.

  • Rose

i missed the part about your book. sounds wonderful. going to order a copy right now. all your photos... BEEEYOUTEEFULL !!

  • Rose

    Hi LeslieAnn
Thank you for asking about me today! Things still seem pretty bleak. Really struggling. So hard to face myself in the mirror each morning when you know whats coming. Another sink full of hair to be discarded. Another day of looking at the stranger I'm becoming. Tried a wig shop about a month ago hoping to regain some thin shred of self esteem. It was pretty awful. Can't seem to find a salon in my area that really cares about helping me look my best and feel better about my situation. So, I still stay home most of the time.

Enough about me. How are you? Loved viewing your pictures. They are just beautiful! You are obviously a strong and happy woman. What I wouldn't give for a dose of that :)

    Thanks again and take care!

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.!!!!!

My hair is getting thinner, especially in the past 3 months. I have very low iron and wonder if that's what's causing it? I feel scared and frustrated.

Hi Leslie! I am doing well. Thank you for asking. I read your profile and almost feel over laughing at your friend that was in the car accident. I am glad that nothing serious happen to her but the reason it made me laugh the same thing happen to me years ago when I was in a car accident. I went one direction and the wig another direction! LOL! I can laugh about it today, but at the time because I was so concerned about people coming up to the car to help and see my bald head that I hadn't noticed my knee cap was busted up.(that's the sad part I was in so much pain but all I wanted was to find my wig. My eyes are tearing now. My life had been spared and all I was concerned about was how I looked. My heart was still in pain back then because of my alopecia. I feel so much better now and have adapted to living with it. Here it is years later and I find this site with people like me. I am glad you introduced yourself to me and let me know about your book.

  • Linsey

Hi LeslieAnn, thanks for your welcome. I'm excited to read that you are an author and have written a book on alopecia. I am also a writer and am writing fiction books about kids dealing with alopecia. I have had alopecia all of my life and i'd love to be able to encourage other who have it as well as help people who don't to understand it.
Hope you are having a good weekend. We're celebrating Father's Day here in Australia. My two small boys and I had fun making the day special for my husband.

I am new to alopecia and felt very alone.  I am reading your book now and love it.  This website and your book has helped so much.  It has been about a year now and now I realize not only am I not alone but that I can accept everything and it will be alright.

  • readwrite62

Hi- Thanks for the welcome. I am doing well but starting to get antsy about using steroid injections. Have had them every 6 weeks or so for the last 5 years.  But just got a diagnosis of osteopenia and I wonder if they could be related. I am sure it can't help.  I am 51, but my 75 year old mom has good bone scans.

  • readwrite62

Thanks for the response.  The shots work for me in some areas and not others- but they sure don't stop the formation of new bare spots.

  • Michelle

Hello Leslie Ann! Thank you for your kind welcome it is greatly appreciated! My daughter had a dermatologist appt today and received steroid injections in her scalp ( this is always hard for me to watch). We are hopeful today as we have some new things to try! How are you doing?
