About Me:
I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.

Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon

"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..

"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy

I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.

I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."

Hi Leslie Ann, many thanks for the welcome, it's very much appreciated.  I'm knew to this site, and to alopecia (3/4 of a year now, aa slowly turning into totalis...... I noticed that I had lost my nasal hair the other day, which for some reason made me chuckle).... such a silly illness.

Sadly I live in Iraq, so don't have the ability to buy your book just now.  But I will definitely get it when I'm next back in England.

Again thanks for reaching out, very nice of you.

  • eileen Taufel

    Thanks for contacting me Leslie.

Are you wearing a wig, if so you look wonderful.

Where did you buy it if it is a wig.

Good Morning to you, I am extremely glad to make your acquaintance. Wow, who knew this site was out there. I'm very happy to have found it, and so far into my journey with Alopecia even. I'm going to Amazon now and buy your book, look forward to the read. It's officially Spring break after today so I'll have time to enjoy the book. I do find myself having Alopecia. I was seventeen when I was first diagnosed its been about twenty years now, and I'd say around ten of those with universals. I am an extremely positive gal who is a university student and a mother of four. My hope is to get to assist others while they walk through the emotional impact of our disorder when I earn my degree. I wear hair pieces and that is an ever evolving aspect of my situation. I love to learn of new companies and products. It's funny I have always been obsessed with hair so I guess in that aspect nothing has really changed. Enjoy the warm sun today!

Hi and Thank you for the welcome, not sure how I am to angry to know. My heart is broken and all I think about is what is in store for my beautiful 7 yr old granddaughter. Kids are so cruel to one another and that is my fear, how she will be treated. She still has hair on her head, yet there are a lot of bold spots and it is getting harder to cover them up. She is beautiful and always will be nothing will change that . Is there research going on for this? Is there anything out there that has made a difference in the hair loss? So many questions and no answers right now, need more information, yet what I know is not looking good. Help is what I need to help my daughter and granddaughter. Thank You Katharine.

Hi Leslie Ann,  Well, I'm up and down.  I think I'm up if I just don't think about it and then down....and overwhelmed when I do.  Also, on my mind is the fact that the dermatologist took a biopsy off the top of my nose and on my chest and did not like the look at all of the possible skin cancer on my nose.  Great.  But, on a brighter note I was having a big pity party yesterday when I went to respond to you and saw a comment from a grandma who was so said her sweet 7 year old grand daughter was losing all her hair....that put me back into reality.  I just don't know anything about FFA at ALL!  My doctor prescribed clobetasol to apply twice daily around hair line.  I don't even know what else to do!!  Ugh.  I am thinking should I go gluten-free because of the auto-immune connection?? But right now I don't want to--I am a serious cook and foodie and that would really piss me off!!  I guess I better start my researching..... Thanks for caring :)

Hi LeslieAnn,  Thanks for welcoming me.  I am losing my hair around the hairline as well as my eyebrows for the last 5 years.  My daughter has AA since she was very young.   She is a great example for me and I will appreciate all that can be learned on this sight as well as your book.  Hope your day has been lovely!

  • Suzanne Capella

Hello LeslieAnn. Kind of you to take the time to welcome me to this site.  Yes, a lot has happened to me over the last 2 years.  I am totally in the dark as to how my condition will progress but I keep busy, have a positive mental attitude, hate the thought of losing my hair, as it's part of my identity, ( I have long hair), and am trying to find out as much as I can as to what I can do, if anything to try and stop it!!!!! (or am I just being too optimistic)!!

So far I have asked to speak to a specialist who can hopefully give me some more information as there are so many things I would like to know, but the appointment has not yet come through, so who knows how long it will take.

It's great to have a web site like this where  I can get some answers  and

advice when I need it.  Can you let me know what your book is?  Take care, and many thanks.

  • magda

Hi Lesley Ann, thanks for welcoming me to the alopaecia site. Loneliness is a side effect of hair-loss especially for someone like me who has few family, so very grateful to network with any others in samesituation.

Today is my appointment at a hair salon who are hopefully going to provide a wig paid for by the NHS. This has taken a few years and is the best (only)  thing available from my doctor. This site has helped me already as has added to my research , I shall go to the

appointment better informed but very nervous. Self-esteem is zero, can only get better !

  • Helen

I am still very tender about the whole business, I don't have high self esteem and this after few months of bad stuff seems so unfair! I have been working on my issues and was feeling good about the future as an artist, blogger and mum without the responsibilities, my nest is empty!  You angels at AW seems so lovely and beautiful I am not sure where to begin ... I am not ready for a wig yet... I love scarves and hats so I will stick with those for the time being. ... not ready to come out as I am not pleased with whats happening so I am afraid that will do more harm than good even my husband and children have not seen the result of the last 2 weeks it is horrible I weep to think of it ... Thanks for your kind words and welcome Helen

    Hi LeslieAnn,

I'm sorry that was my mistake. I will be ordering your book!

Thank you for your warm welcome!  I look forward to reading your book!  My 8 year old daughter just started wearing a hat today to cover her spots, but before was just creatively wearing bows, barettes, and always adjusting/repositioning her remaining hair, etc. She just had scalp injections a few days ago, and don't know how effective it will be. Creams did not help.  Do you have suggestions about the best sites to go to for children wigs, thoughts for swimming, scalp coverings, other useful products etc.  She did lose part of her eyebrow and used my eyeliner pencil to color it in!  I am bracing for her to develop the universalis form as she is already without arm or leg hair.  Any thoughts on products, coping mechanisms for her, how a parent could best help her (things to say, do, etc) having been through it yourself?  Any input is so appreciated.  Thank you!  Patty

Hi LeslieAnn and thanks for the welcome:) my daughter is as awesome as ever. Crazy how she has been stronger through her hair loss than I've been. I'll be sure to check out your book...
  • BaldisBeautiful

    Hi Leslie Ann,

We are both doing very well, thanks so much for asking.  My daughter is sooo excited about graduating from kindergarten and looking forward to summer.

It is so wonderful of you to have written a book about your experiences.  I hope that one day my daughter will be as positive, confident, and helpful with others.  We have worked so hard to keep her from feeling like being bald is a bad thing, but as she gets older it is getting harder.

I thought it was about time I searched for a little more support and guidance.

Thanks so much for the welcome!

  • thanks for the welcome. I was beginning to feel dumb for joining. Would enjoy reading your book when it comes out
  • leah

Hi Thanks, I went to the meeting the Seattle group had at hospital last year. Last month I had to work late and missed the 2nt. I am hoping to see if they do anything this summer. 2 weekends ago, my friend Shari and I went up to Vancouver, BC group.  They were all lot of fun and sweet! I look forward to your book.

  • GABI'S WIGS

    Hi LeslieAnn,

Thank you so much about telling me about your book. I can hardly wait to get it.  I have a wig shop in Toronto where 60% of my customers suffer from alopecia.  I just had two young girls yesterday that came in yesterday with tears about their alopecia and I wish I could have told them about your book.  I don't really have a lot of advise - just one.  I had

thyroid problems and lost my hair in the front.  Someone told me to take vitamin D and I can't tell you how much it helped to thicken my remaining hair and stop the falling but did not help the front a lot.  So if someone is just starting alopecia it might help to stop further falling.  I love love my european hair wigs.

Very best to you.  Keep up your good work and smile.

    Gabi.

  • Kathleena

Thanks LeslieAnn, I have just looked your book up! WOW love the cover and the contents sound interesting and helpful. I have rally struggled for years but now in a happy place. I am now starting to this about asking someone to endorse my book. What do you think about it LeslieAnn? it would be to go on the back cover and of course would have reference for your own book and this website? To see a little more about it you can read my blurb on www.saledlie.com on the front and on books page. Thanks and please let me know what you think :-)

  • Annette

Thank you for welcoming me to AW.  My girls and I are fine and we hope you are too.  I just finished reading through your informative profile.  I plan to purchase your book for my daughter (and me too!).  She doesn't like to talk about her alopecia so I think your reading your book will serve her well in many ways.  Thanks again!  God bless you...

    Hi LeslieAnn,
I ordered your book and must say it was so nice to read and relate too. You are an inspiration! I live in Portland, Or and have just gotten my first full hairpiece, however, I need a few touch ups on it. Can you recommend a hair stylist that works on wigs in Portland? Hope to hear from you. Have a great day!
  • Tommy

Thanks for your reply LeslieAnn, and for all your info :)

I have looked into the drug you mentioned. It seems from the article I read, that 'they' are going to work on a cream form version of the drug, probably to avoid serious internal sideeffects. It looks like there's a possibility that they might find a working cure within a few years. I'm thinking If only they could identify, isolate and/or remove the factors that cause the sideeffects in their new cream form, then it's going to be a huge discovery.

Thank you and she is doing great!  A few more spots have appeared (right here at the beginning of school) but depending on the way she wears it, not so noticeable.  I look forward to reading your book.  Hope you are doing well.

  • MamaDavis

Thanks Leslie. I'm having rough moments today but I didn't spend the whole day crying so its better than days I've had. I just feel so helpless and I hate, absolutely hate being so emotional about it. My journey is just starting and freaking out about now far its going to progress! Hope you had a great day!
  • Malin

Hi Leslie-Ann, and thank you for your welcoming me.

This website have finally made me realize that I'm not alone in this World and that there's people that understands me and know what I'm going through. I got diagnosed in February, and loosing my hair slowly so I'm definitely a beginner in all of this and trying to get through day by day.
I understand that you have a book abt this, i will buy it as soon as I'm back in america. Im visiting my family in sweden right now. Im very excited to read it, I Think it might be just what i need right now.

hope all is well and thank you for your email!

  • Malin

Thank you for your welcoming! I just got diagnosed, so I'm definitely new in the situation. Trying to stay positive and happy even though som Days are easier than others. I guess that's a part of the process. Congratulations onn your book, I will definitely order it!

  • Sara

Hello :) thanks for the welcome message ! We are doing ok. Was just looking at your comments and definitely plan on getting your book :)
  • Daphne

Thanks for the message. It is nice to know we are all not alone! My seven year old daughter was diagnosed exactly a year ago with Alopecia Totalis. Within 3 months, she had entirely lost her hair, but not her eyebrows and eyelashes. We are working with a Dermatologist, but have also seeked the help of a Naturopath. After extensive food sensitivity testing, and live blood work, we have eliminated gluten completely, as well as dairy, and eggs primarily. She has been on this regimented diet since November 1. March, she started to get blonde peach fuzz. She now has hair, covering about 70 percent of her head. It is coming in in patches, just as it shed, but we are thrilled to have any regrowth. We understand Alopecia is very unpredictable, and we are prepared for what may be a very long journey, but feel very fortunate at this point. I look forward to reading your book.

  • Tiffany

Hi LeslieAnn, Thanks for the Welcome. So glad Ive joined. I feel greatful to have found this Website. I feel relieved that I can talk with people who understand how it feels to lose all your hair or some of your hair. This is a very vulnerable and scarey time. I also read on your wall you wrote a book. Ill have to search for it and give it a read. Have a great day !

    Thanks

  • Kojack

    Hi Lesley:
I am havingg a good day in spite of the fact that we have SNOW this morning in AB, CAnada, and it is way too early for that. I am thankful that I can winter in Yuma, AZ, USA, but don't head south til end Oct.
The reason I chose Kojack as my name for this site is my fiancé (68 yrs old and finally found the love of my life, got engaged August 13th) said, when I was diagnosed in Aug, "Guess I will just have to call u Kojack then." That was his way of making light of it. I am thankful that I got it later in life (had such a thick head of hair til now) and that it is not life threatening. Just hoping we can arrest any further hair loss. I haven't read of any others having lost all hair on arms and legs as well as frontal, eyebrows and around ears, and wondering if I am alone in that symptom? At present (since August 23rd) I am applying topical 0.05% glucocorticoid lotion twice daily around hairline on head and taking 1 Finasteride every 48 hrs. If no improvement in 2 mos., I go for (cortisone?) injections. Scalp is still very itchy on and off so not sure if treatment is working or not.
Just want to add that my heart goes out to the mom's of little girls who have alopecia. Praying for all of you that they will find a cure for this.
  • Maggie

Thank you Leslie Ann for your welcome message. I have read about your book on here and I am very much looking forward to reading it! Have a great day.
