I'm an artist and author living in Portland, Oregon. I've had aa for about 45 years. My award-winning book, "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" is still available at a number of online sources including Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Written a few years ago, it's not completely up to date on medical findings, but these are readily available on this site.
Here are a couple of reviews: This "how-to" book provides a much needed text on dealing with emotional and cosmetic aspects of hair loss, whether from alopecia areata or chemotherapy. It details where to find and how to use products for compensating with this loss. It is written in the same bold and bright style that characterizes LeslieAnn's illustrations." -Janet Roberts, M.D., Portland Oregon
"This book is helpful, hopeful, funny and fabulous. It's full of practical advice about wigs, intimate encounters, the inappropriate questions from strangers, and other issues you face when every day is a bad hair day. Women with alopecia, LeslieAnn Butler is your new best friend " -Margie Boul , Columnist, The Oregonian ..
"An essential read, whether you've lost hair, or care about someone who has. Leave it to Leslie Ann to bring humor and glamour to a difficult topic. She is a living testament that the lack of flowing locks is no reason not to live your most glamorous and joyful life. Be inspired and uplifted by this remarkable woman's personal journey." -Nita Lina Howard, Author of A Woman's Journey is Her Legacy
I wrote "If Your Hair Falls Out, Keep Dancing!" to help other people -- particularly women and girls --and it's one that I wish I had been able to find when I discovered I had alopecia years ago.
I have stumbled through all the stages of grief (feeling guilty because, after all, there are worse things than alopecia), figuring out how to look normal, bouncing from one treatment to another, buying and ruining or rejecting dozens of wigs, losing every single hair on my body, figuring out how to tell guys I was dating, living in fear of the wind and someone touching my head…all in all, going from heartbreak to acceptance to joy and confidence. And it's all in the book, along with experiences of others, advice on wigs, makeup, products, treatments -- and how you can celebrate your life with alopecia areata, go after your dreams, and know you're not alone."
That is awesome news, the possibility that I may get my hair back. Will be keeping my fingers crossed on that one.
Looks like we have more than alopecia in common. Congrats and best wishes in your new romance. My friends always told me good things come to those who wait. Just didn't think I would have to wait that long (divorced in 1993 after 23 yrs).
I must say you wear 68 well!!! Good for you! And I really like your wig in the pics. I am sure u r an encouragement to many.
Hello, im from Bosnia and i have SCARRING ALOPECIA LICHEN PLANOPILARIS,and doctor told me that i probably have ANDROGENIC ALOPECIJA to! Im 29 years old and im dealing with that since i was 20 years old. I still have my own hair but i decide to by a wig so i was wondering if someone can give me some advice regarding that and i would be glad if i can exchange experiences relatet to diagnosis.Doctors told me that is not hereditary, but im scared that my children could inherit it from me when i decide to have them. I think im dealing with this very good theres a days when i just cry when im alone in my 4 walls and sometimes i just say things could be much worse. You are healthy, smart enjoy in your life. Some people are struggling with the horible desises like that i comfortet myself. But still its hard especially when you know that you never had even a broken tooth not to mention that i have never been sick in my life and for years i have alopecia and i dont know why or how to treat her!
I am great... Thanks for asking. I finished reading your book, and find it very helpful. A great read, with just enough fun to keep it balanced. I have only been diagnosed for about 1 month, I still have hair and am hopeful it will grow back, however I am still loosing hair at a fast rate. I read and research all I can about this disease. I would love to make a difference in the lives of children who are facing alopecia.
Thanks for asking. I've been on an optional rollercoaster since last week when my daughter asked me why god did this to her. She doesn't know much about the possibility of losing all of her hair yet. She does a great job at covering up the bald spots on her head. I have faith that we will get through this whatever the outcome may be. I'm glad that I found this website because not many friends or family have ever heard of it and since she is so good at covering her bald spots they don't know what we are dealing with at this point. Thx for inquiring how I am. I'm still learning how to use this site so if I've replied in the wrong area I apologize.
Many thanks and blessings to you!
i was just reading all the comments about your book, i think i am going to purchase it, i need all the encouragement i can get. not only am i trying to deal with the fact that i have lost almost all of my hair, my eyebrows and eye lashes are starting to go as well. but my boyfriend of 3 and a half years decided that he can't handle being in a relationship right now because he has too many personal issues going on within in himself.(too long of a story) talk about bad timing. although his decision has nothing to do with me and my issues but the TIMING REALLY SUCKS. how do you try to be stress free at a time like this? not to mention feeling very unattractive. i'm trying to have a positive attitude about my situation, until your hear about others suffering from the same issues it's hard to deal with. So far i have gotten many compliments on my new hair style, which is a little encouraging.
thanks for letting me vent, and i will be sure to get your book.
Thanks for your welcoming comments. My day was Ok and yours? This is really a cool site! What book(s) did you write? Like to know and hopefully get to know you.
I thought I responded to your message before but see it did not go through. I am glad to find a group of people to talk to that have the same problems that I do. I have a great hairdresser who takes great care of my wigs but am still not ready to go with only a scarf or hat to exercise. I'm trying...you'd think it would be easy after 17 years but it is not.
Hi LeslieAnn,
Thank you for the welcome! I've been very excited to share my stories to others with alopecia. I have 26 years bottled up and telling my issues I battle with to people who don't have alopecia seems pointless sometimes because they will never truly understand the struggles!
Hope you are doing well!
Please feel free to send a message. I finally feel I'm able to let it all out to people who get it!

Hi - thanks for the welcome. This is the 2nd time I have had cancer (cervical in 2012), but the first time I have lost my hair. It sure is weird, but I am having fun trying on wigs! I also would like my granddaughter, who is a makeup artist, to make me up to look like a "Grey" alien (I love SF) and also paint my head to look like a light bulb! LOL I was actually thinking about starting a bog called "Fun with Cancer." I try to keep a light heart and love to Laugh!! My best fun right now is watching "Big Bang Theory!" Have a Great Day!! Carol : D
Hi - I have been taking "Xeljanz" for 7 weeks 5mg 2X a day and not 1 hair yet!!! No side effects other then it has lowered my blood pressure and pulse which is nice. I am calmer and sleeping better. For me, the medicine doesn't like acid so I don't take it near the time I drink coffee, alcohol or spices acidic food and everything is great. If I did then my stomach would get distended/puffy and I would have to belch a lot (gross). I see Doctor tomorrow to have blood work done and compare to when I started......keep you posted.
Hi LeslieAnn,
I purchased your book and so much of it is my life! I feel like I wrote it less the beautiful art work, and I have never had cancer thank God! You are very talented! I love the cover picture! How would I get a print of that? Thank you so much for writing my life! 26 years of AU. I'm almost 51 and have experienced so much in life.
Hi LeslieAnn thanks for the welcome. I like the title of your book!
I have been dancing since I was 2 years old & that's exactly what I carried on doing when my hair fell out there was no way I was going to let it stop me! I will drop dead before I stop dancing! I will look with interest at getting a copy :)
Hello LeslieAnn,it was so good to hear from someone one here. My problems with my hair started in my early teen years. I have been wearing wigs since then and I am soon to turn 57. I still have a hard time dealing with people always asking if it is my real hair and bringing up conversations about going to the salon and anything that has to do with taking care of your own real hair. It is so bad that it took me 10 years to allow my husband to see me without my head covered. I am looking into buying your book. Maybe it will give me some self confidence.
Thank you for welcoming me. I just came home from having my injections so am not feeling up to par. Trying to keep my spirits up. This is the 3rd relapse in 4 years. I plan to order you book. Can't wait to read it !
Hi - I saw the doc last week and as soon as I get the blood work done and back we will up the dose of Xeljanz to 5 mg 3X per day and hopefully that will jump start some growth.
Hi! That's great that you are doing well. Ive been better... It's hard finding a job. Esp. During breast cancer month. But I am a big fan of breast cancer awareness, especially because. My mom is almost 4.5 year suivor!! If you don't mind me asking? How long have had AU? Iv been without any hair for almost 7 years!! :( if you don't wanna tell me. I totally understand no questions asked. In please forgive in advance. I do not mean you any harm of any sort. I just kinda wanna feel not alone, it really sucks.. Your the first person. That Iv talked to about AU, that was like us.. <3
Thank you so much for reaching out to me. It's ironic that you should ask how I am. Actually, I am feeling a bit nervous today. I am taking out my weave today and having my stylist shave my head for the very first time. I don't have any hair any more to tie the weave down. The entire front of my head is now bald. My family and friends have been very supportive. However, I cannot help but feel that I am in mourning for the loss of whatever hair I have left. Trying to keep a positive outlook. I tell everyone that with my new look, I'm going to look better than Demi Moore in G.I. Jane. :-)
Thank you for the warm welcome! I'm ok thanks, obviously new to all this so just trying to navigate round and find out what the sites all about! Looks really good!
How long have you been on here for? (Congrats on the book by the way! Really impressive - just have to order a copy! :) ) x
Thanks, it seems like a great community! I'm interested in your book, too. I may even purchase one (when I get paid again) and host a giveaway on my blog if that would be OK with you? It's a very new blog, so I need to get rolling a bit, and figure out more of html, which is foreign to me. But I am definitely interested in reading your book and giving one away. :)
I do want to get your book and read as much as I can. You look very happy/beautiful in your pictures....it gives me hope. I'm usually such a "glass half full" person, but this has knocked me down a bit to be honest.
Thanks for the welcome. It is relieving to see others that are going through this and dealing with it so positively as I feel frustrated and so unsure about the future. I see that you have a book - I will definitely be looking into it more.
hi leslieann - thanks for the welcome! it is greatly appreciated! i've had alopecia for about nine years and my son for about a year. your book looks terrific - i will check it out. have a great day!
Thanks for the hello. I am doing ok. I wish hair pieces and wigs didn't cost so much. I have been looking but on a limited income it is impossible to buy one but I am fine so far without one. I have decided to try and help other low income women by asking women who have wigs or toppers to send them to me. I am going to start a program to provide them at no cost to these women who can't afford them. I hope it works out but it may take some time to get it set up. I have asked for wigs on facebook and have had positive responses. I hope all suffering with Alopecia are doing well.
Im loving your book, my partner was reading it too, but I caught him rolling a ciggie on it one day and confiscated it from his presence lol. I just adore the images and I am so glad I bought a hard copy because even the pages have a lovely feel and quality to them.
I think you are really brave and talented and thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for assisting me with acceptance of AA.
Hi Leslie, thank you for the welcome. I see you are a blonde too - would love any advice on what hair you wear. Your blonde is the kind of blonde I have been looking for. Nice to meet you. I look forward to reading more about your book too.
Thanks for the note! I'm doing great today really all the time. My little girl keeps me laughing and so busy with work and baby prep it keeps life interesting. Your book sounds awesome I will have to look into it. So nice to see someone help others see the that you can live life without hair.
Heather
Thanks for reaching out to say "hi" to another balding stranger. I had not heardof your book until I read the comments on your wall. It sounds great. Ilook forward to reading it. I am always impressed when someone turns a painful experience into something really good in the world, and artistic, to boot. I have a dermatology and lab appt tomorrow, am hoping to get some more info on why I am looking more and more like a billiard ball every day. Have a great day and nice to "meet" you.
Tell me about it. I look forward to reading the book :). I know exactly what you mean with the eyebrow tattooing, i had mine done when i first lost the brows but my ink disappeared once the scabbing came off. I cant believe she got a needle in your eye! Sorry that you had to experience that. I really like the idea of the temporary eyebrows as ive never heard of that before.
I will try out the shadow, because it gets annoying wearing the lashes all the time.
Hi LeslieAnn, Thank you for your welcome e mail. I am doing fine. Heading to the dermatologist tomorrow for my 2nd round of injections. I just ordered your book and look forward to reading it.
I see you are from Portland and I live in Seattle-a fellow "Northwesterner".
Hi Leslie Ann, Thank you for the welcome. I am new here. I was just diagnosed with Alopecia a month ago. I look forward to reading your book. I have so many questions and need tips.
Wow, very cool Leslie. I'd love to see some of your work, it's always very cool to meet like-minded people, or anyone that has a beautiful energy.I appreciate being accepted into this community,I don't have full Alopecia, just the reseeding hairline, but I know how it feels to feel different than others because of My scoliosis and a few other of life's challenges.... I can't even imagine(at first) how insane this process must be for you Women of this Society, but ya know, it's all about being proud to be different than others! I happen to want to live in reverse of all the conforms Myself. I hope to have a chance to meet some awesome friends on here. Thank you Leslie.
Hello LeslieAnn and thank you for the welcome. Sadie is doing OK but losing quite a lot of hair from the top of her head at the moment, this is the first time that's happened so for me it's hard not to worry. When the AA first started last year the patches were all underneath and had started to grow back until very recently when the new ones started at the top. Sadie is 5 years old and very happy go lucky and doesn't seem affected emotionally...yet. We are taking each day as it comes. I've been looking for something to help her understand when she needs it and it sounds like your book might just be the thing. I need to find ways to keep strong for her and that's hard at the moment but I will get there. All the best. Sharon.
Thank you for the welcome. I love your picture by the piano, I commented there. I am going to Amazon to order your book right now. It sounds like it might help! Thanks!
Thank you so much! I didn't know temp brows existed! I am new at AU. I've only just accepted the fact I have it and my hair won't come back. I'm going to get your book when I can. I've seen some subjects on your page like eczema and alopecia. I also have severe food allergies to food like almonds, bananas, plumbs. I am excited about the brows and getting ready to order some. Thank You!
Also how do you line up your lashes? I'm having problems since I have no lashes to line them up. I guess it takes practice. Do you order your lashes on line too? I have to use a non allergenic glue because I am allergic to the regular glue. (Latex) Thank you! You have been so helpful!
Thank you! I'm armed and dangerous! I ordered my brows and getting ready to order your book. I feel better now and I'm sure I can cope with this disease and look fabulous while doing it!
Of course I will let you know
How did you tell your friends about Alopecia. Within the las six month mine has become universal. What a change in my image. I still have eyebrows and lashes. I only told my mom, siblings and a very close friend. I have not discussed it with anyone else. How did you approach your family and friends about it?
Thank you for reaching out to me

LeslieAnn, you are such a kind hearted person. You are a talented artist and author. You reach out to new members and welcome us. You answer our questions and give us some encouragement that alopecia is a disease that you can live with and be awesome while doing it. I appreciate you reaching out to me. I was feeling pretty bald, ugly, and self conscious. Thank you so much. You are a beautiful person inside & out!
Hello!
I am good! In reading your profile, looks like I need to check out your book! I have a lot of questions about wigs. So much to learn!
Have a great day!

I am good! In reading your profile, looks like I need to check out your book! I have a lot of questions about wigs. So much to learn!
Have a great day!
