- I had alopecia areate and universalis as a child, from 5 years to 19; losing and growing hair and mostly having patches. At 20 I went hat and scarf free and shaved my head. True freedom! A year later it started growing in and I had a passable head of hair until 41, when my hair fell out from Thanksgiving to Christmas. I shaved it just before Christmas. Being bald is new for me as an adult, but I've got all the old coping mechanisms I developed as a child. It sort of sucks and is sort of fun all at once.
