About Me:
I have had alopecia totalis since 1989. It occured gradually, beginning with my nape, then the temples and finally, everywhere.

I was living with my ex-husband in an RV, touring the US. We were in South Florida in the summer and much too hot and humid to wear a wig, so I used sunscreen and went au naturel immediately. My husband retired from the submarine service, and was already shaving his head, a practice he started while underway. This made it easier for me to be bald. We were known as the 'Egg Benedicts.'

At first, I was concerned that something was drasticallly wrong with me, so I went to the doctor. Diagnosis: Alopecia . . . no known cause, no known cure. That was a relief to know I wasn't dieing! and then acceptance was my way to deal with my loss.

I normally go into the world as a bald woman with a great shaped head . . . so everyone tells me! I wear wigs to keep warm and sometimes on special occassions. I decorate my pallet on Holidays and accessorize with earrings.

My main concern is finding eyeliner that doesn't peel off. I have tried many brands and some days they work and then not. But all in all, I am doing very well as a natural bald!

I have been blessed by being bald, in that I have helped so many that are coping with cancer and are concerned about being bald. Hairloss through chemo should not be a detractor to their recovery. Positiveness is very important in any situation.

Hi - if you still live in San Diego and would like to meet some local folks with Alopecia, we're having a lunch to celebrate International Alopecia Day, Saturday, August 4, 2012.

We're having lunch (margaritas if you want) at Tio Leo's Mexican restaurant at 3510 Valley Centre Drive in Del Mar (It's actually in Carmel Valley, right off Hwy 56 and I-5). You can view their menu here: http://www.tioleos.com/

They're not charging us for the room, but there is a $10 per person (food and beverages total) minimum charge.

Gathering time is 11:30am - it will be casual and will continue as long as we're having fun. I'll bring my "International Alopecia Day" banner and anyone who wants to be in the photos for our annual YouTube video can. If you don't want to be in the photos, that's fine, too.
We have a private room in the back of the restaurant. Come bald, in a scarf, or in a wig - or in your hair if you have it!

Please let me know if you're planning on attending so I can give the restaurant a count.

All the best,
Mary

Hello and welcome, Grace!
I have a great eyeliner suggestion for you. I use MAC Fluidliner. It won't come off, I promise you!

Hi Grace,

Glad you like the photos and the fun. I had no idea having alopecia would be so much fun and bring me together with the nicest people.

Hope all is good with you down in San Diego.
